Still taking this in—last night, our collaboration "Hitchhikers" brought home Regional Gold and National Silver at the National Mural Awards. This piece was created with @_emilyding during @overlayfest Fest in Springfield, Missouri, as a tribute to the origins and mythology of Route 66. What started as an idea about movement, history, and the spirit of the road became something bigger through collaboration—layered perspectives, shared intuition, and a lot of trust in the process. This was our first time painting together, and it meant a lot to step into that space with someone whose work I’ve admired and respected for a long time. There’s a different kind of energy that comes from building something side by side, and I’m proud of what we created. Grateful to the @national_mural_awards for the recognition, and big respect to all the artists pushing the work forward and taking home well-earned honors. The bar keeps rising. We're excited to announce the artists for the upcoming Mabion mural in the Kansas City Beacon Hill neighborhood: @itraicons ITRA is a Kansas City–based mural collective led by artists Isaac Tapia and Rodrigo Alvarez, creating large-scale public artworks that transform shared spaces into expressions of cultural memory, community identity, and collective voice. Grounded in their lived experience—including immigrant perspectives that inform their understanding of movement, myth, and belonging—their work brings layered cultural narratives into the public realm. Their practice is rooted in direct collaboration with the communities they serve, translating local histories and lived experience into vibrant, visually compelling murals. ITRA’s work has been featured nationally, with projects spanning Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Iowa, alongside installations at Kansas City International Airport and exhibits with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. They frequently work in culturally significant environments and on multi-stakeholder initiatives requiring both artistic vision and civic sensitivity. Their work operates at the intersection of art and advocacy—creating murals that serve as visual landmarks and enduring reflections of the communities they represent. We're excited to announce a 🚨NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS 🚨 Overlay, Inc., in partnership with the Mabion Family and @thevecinogroup , invites artists living or working in the Kansas City region and surrounding areas to apply for a public art opportunity at the newly developed Mabion affordable housing project located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood in Kansas City, MO. This housing project is designed to expand access to quality, affordable housing in North Kansas City while supporting community connectivity and neighborhood revitalization in the area. Public art will be a core component of this space, serving as both a visual anchor and a tribute to the community’s past, present, and future.
