The countdown to Route 66 celebrations continues! 🎉 On Thursday, April 30, Springfield dedicated the Birthplace of Route 66 at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and St. Louis Street—the former site of the Colonial Hotel and the spot where the telegram announcing “The Mother Road” was sent in 1926. The new plaza features Juan Garaizabal’s @juan_garaizabal life‑size sculpture, "The Ghost of the Colonial Hotel", a glowing sculpture that traces the hotel’s silhouette in steel, bringing its memory back into the downtown skyline.
Just down the road, another piece of the Colonial lives on at the Springfield Art Museum. Four of the original hotel columns anchor our WPA‑era amphitheater since the late 1990s. Thanks to a community‑powered Giving Tuesday campaign, these century‑old landmarks were restored in 2022 and remain open to visit, even while the Museum undergoes renovation.
You can read more about the columns on the Museum's blog: /offthewall

The countdown to Route 66 celebrations continues! As you stroll down C‑Street, be sure to stop in front of the Springfield Police Officers Association Building (233 E. Commercial Street) to check out a series of Museum collection reproductions inspired by the open road and travel along America’s highway system.
While the Museum’s galleries are closed during our historic renovation and expansion, we’re bringing the art to you! This C‑Street installation is part of our growing series of pop‑up exhibitions designed to inspire wonder and connect you with beloved works in unexpected places. Keep an eye out—more pop‑ups are on the way.

A big thank you to Historic C-Street for helping coordinate, and for "Art is Everywhere" support from the Melinda J. McDaniel Charitable Trust, UW, Bank of America, N.A., Trustees and The Hatch Foundation.

The countdown to Route 66's 100th Anniversary is on! As you plan your celebrations, be sure to check out the Springfield 66: Sculpture Series, a citywide public art initiative led by Heidi Herman-Bacon. "Buzz of the Mother Road" by artist Emily Schmidt and sponsored by Aaron Sachs Law, is located on Brookside Drive, just east of the Springfield Art Museum. Inspired by the golden age of Route 66, this design celebrates the glow of neon lights, classic cars, and the spirit of the open road. Featuring a vintage Ford Fairlane and a motorcycle, it captures the energy, freedom, and shared stories that define the Mother Road. This sculpture
