For the third consecutive year, the WASZP Class returns to the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series. Annapolis local and Waszp sailor Daniel Draper is one to watch.
โI think itโs probably the coolest sailing class at any given event, or anywhere you go,โ Draper said, noting how โitโs a really interesting boat to look at for people who donโt know what sailing is, and people who are into sailing still have tons of questions.โ
What makes the Waszp so special? For Draper, it comes down to the speed: โI really love how you can get up to 22-25 knots on any average day, and thatโs a really cool thing you just canโt do in other sailing classes.โ
Last weekend, Draper won the Region 4 Qualifier, one of the most competitive qualifiers in the country, and advanced to the National Championships.
Coming off this win and heading into a competitive weekend, Draper is โPrioritizing sleep more, weโre going to be out for longer days โ more important racing, so more more physical conditionsโ
Keep up with the hive this weekend ๐ โ linktr.ee/sailingworldregattas
And watch out for the Inaugural National Championship, held May 30โ31, 2026, at Toms River Yacht Clubโfeaturing the top 12 high school and top 12 college athletes.
