Happy Preview week to the Company and Creatives of PIPPIN at Signature Theatre! Here’s a peek at some of the masks and headwear from the show that have come out of our shop. Some are complete builds, while others are real Venetian masks adapted to our purposes, and still more are lightweight dressed up toys appearing as choreography friendly helmets. Day one of Rehearsal for PIPPIN at Signature Theatre! I am always delighted to craft theatre with this group of incredible artists and this show is no exception to that rule! The cast is dynamite, the design team is exquisite, and the vision is really something to sink your teeth into. Ours is a shadow laden take on this legendary Broadway musical, viewing this piece through the lens of an early 1970’s Death Cult. The trappings of a Medieval morality pageant are mixed with a dash of classic Commedia, a little art house glamour and whole lot of Ritual Sacrifice. Mirrored sequins, Metallics, sumptuous velvets, embroidery, studded leather, delicate ruffles, ombré denim, and crochet lace make up the textures of this world. An enticing sheen for a dangerous underbelly on the quest for a piece of the sky. Please enjoy a little slice of the sketches for the show, this has been a fun one to illustrate. When the parts can stand on their own it makes for a strong looking whole! My favorite model and lovely wife @re.teague kindly channeled a warrior of the wasteland to illustrate how some of my most recently posted pieces work together. Screaming Skull Wasteland Chest Harness. While I gear up for another show, I’m really enjoying making modular accessories for post apocalyptic looks. I made this gorget from recycled acid wash denim, heavy interfacing, jersey knit, wide military belt webbing, East German suspender hardware, a metal Immortan Joe sigil and a plethora of rusted rivets. Getting back in the crafting saddle with a new Wasteland Headpiece! Inspired by the intimidating looks of Auntie Entity’s Elite Guard in Beyond Thunderdome, I wanted to make a war crest that used an animal tail as a mohawk. I also wanted to incorporate something that obscured the wearer’s face without too much restriction on vision. So I made a millinery wire cage and added a 5” wide corded upholstery trim as a half mask. Brass conical spikes frame every strap and the whole thing is crowned by replica bullets and a real coyote tail. A generous dose of rust brings together all of the elements in an aesthetically savage way.
