Last minute 1840’s dress and bonnet for a trip to the PA Ren Faire with @forge_and_forage I was very clever and fit the bodice loose enough to wear a wool sweater vest underneath it. Dress fabric from @fabricmart , buckram from @burnleyandtrowbridge and bonnet made out of stash scrap. #1840sfashion #dickensian #christmascarol #parenfaire #yuletide

For those of you who’ve just got here, I’m extra as hell and tend to continue improving things. I’m in the process of “finishing” @forge_and_forage ‘s Faustus costume and decided that my original design was a little too monochrome. So naturally I had to add old gold metallic trim to either side of the black velvet ribbon and pop open a bunch of seams to get all the ends tucked in nicely. Still to come: robe, hat, and other accessories #costumedesign #faust #16thcenturyfashion #elizabethan

King and Queen of Hearts for yesterday’s @mythmakerssociety Mad Tea Party Last event I went super hardcore and made both of our costumes from scratch. This time was mostly secondhand. My two skirts and Alex’s shirt, vest and jacket all came from the Silver Spring Value Village/Unique Thrift (the DMV thrift Mecca). The stays were something I’d made previously, with a purchased appliqué added for this event. It came in a three pack and the other two were added to @forge_and_forage ‘s costume. The red base of my costume was a secondhand dirndl from eBay, I’ve got a @burnleyandtrowbridge kerchief and @americanduchess shoes that I used to wear to work. I’ve got a Hirbawi keffiyeh layered on as well. Alex got a new pair of @historicalemporium trousers for the event. Overall it was nice to use a combo of stuff that I had on hand and secondhand items. There was some new stuff (appliqués, tights, crowns and glasses) but it was mostly secondhand or already in my closet. #costumedesign #aliceinwonderland #madteaparty #queenofhearts #kingofhearts #thrift #thriftedstyle

Embroidery for Ghost Edith is done! Everything from this point forward will be much quicker. I just need to get proper covered buttons, which has to wait until I get back to DC post summer stock. Cannot wait to do a proper side by side with the real costume once this one is completed. #crimsonpeak #cosplay #cosplaywip #embroidery

So exciting to see the embroidery in context after looking at it on plain organza in the hoop for so long! #cosplay #cosplaywip #crimsonpeak #embroidery

After *five years* of being on the UFO pile, the floral embroidery for Ghost Edith is done. Next up I’ve got to paint into them (second picture is the painted sample) and after that they’ll be ready to attach to the dress. #cosplay #crimsonpeak #embroidery

Wore the newest bodice I made to match my favorite skirt to my first ever Pride! The kerchief was a lucky thrift store find, and the hat I made a while ago. #bipride💖💜💙 #historybounding #18thcenturyfashion

Swipe to see why you should put big fat theatrical seam allowances in your cosplays! Theatre costumes are built to be as adjustable as possible down the line so that they can be altered to fit people with different measurements. And sometimes those people with different measurements are you five years later. My side seams have 2” of seam allowance on each piece, so I could let it out about 6” if needed. I needed 3” across the bust and 1” at the waist. #cosplay #cosplaysewing #costumeconstruction #crimsonpeakcosplay

A change of pace from the normal sewing content: behold, my dollhouse bar cabinet. Two-ish years ago, I first saw the Maitland-Smith dollhouse bar cabinet and fell in love. As a freelance theatre artist, I knew I’d never be able to afford it. However, as a freelance theatre artist, my whole job is making things myself or the theater can’t afford 😂 I found a front opening dollhouse on Facebook marketplace for a very reasonable price and have been slowly picking away at it but it’s finally done enough to show off. (I still want to give it some carriage lights and chimneys but that can wait) #dollhouse #barcabinet #whimsicaldecor #diy
