Lucky 5th graders at PS 234 in Manhattan got to meet author @ohtruth for a second time! (They met Ruth as 1st graders with her picture book THANK YOU, NEIGHBOR!) Students enjoyed Ruth’s pitch-perfect presentation about her youth and the creation of her graphic memoir UPROOTED and loved connecting with her one-to-one during the book signing! It was a doozy getting back home to NYC from Europe bc of the blizzard. Three days, three canceled flights, two reroutes, two missed flights and one missed train due to delays, but many wonderful little moments, and one spontaneously fabulous travel companion. Despite being deathly afraid of horses, I was brave and made a few paintings for the Annual Red Envelope show curated by @grumpybert . This year, the show will be at one of my favorite places, @pearlrivermart ! Opening this Sat Feb 7 from 5pm-7pm. These and all other envelopes will be for sale at the show.

It didn’t feel like a very “productive” year for some reason, but now that I spent 2 hrs digging up photos, I see that it was! (Another post to be devoted to this skewed view & other topics covered in therapy this year, I guess.) 1. Got to take my daughter on the same cable car ride I went on 40 yrs ago at @hkoceanpark in Hong Kong. 2. Got to share Uprooted at my old school @gsishk in HK, on the very same steps featured in the book, with my best friends Bonnie and Claudia. 3. Went to see J-Hope live. 😬😉 4. Hung out with family in Florida, where our daughter proved to everyone she is indeed a beach babe. 5. Was the Dorothy Carter Writer-in-Residence at @bankstreetschoolforchildren , & the kids came up with some pretty epic memoir comics. 6. Gave the commencement speech (my first ever 🥴) at @parsons_illustration . 7. My mom and dad wrote me messages they always want me to remember so I got em tattooed on me. Thank you @heytattoonyc . 8. @dougsalati and I had an epically comical weekend upstate, & I taught a comic workshop at @themountlenox . 9. Got a new surfboard 😍 Thank you @glidesurfco & @lovemachine_surfboards . 10. Got last hour tix to see Oasis in Toronto with my brother @ahtoves and it was kind of the best spontaneous sibling bonding. 😭 11. Spent every day this summer on the beach. Our kid had the worst farmers tan despite so much sunblock. 12. Had an illustrator baby reunion in Maine with @peterbrownstudio @xfang_studio @briannehfarley & our three toddlers, who kissed each other & also ignored each other. 13-15. Went to Portugal w/@jeff_vreeland to visit @chanamanaman and @doctorlou , got a tattoo by @enkoveri , went surfing, then to Vienna for school visits, to see some art, & to Slovakia just because we could. 16. Won a Boston-Globe Horn Book Honor Award for Uprooted 😭😭😭 17. Uprooted also got into the @soi128 Original Art Show 18. My bb turned 2 🥹 19. We went to Newfoundland for Christmas, and I learned that a silver fox is not just a hot older man. 20. My now 2-yr-old drew a ‘sad piggie’, representing all the harder, softer corners of the year I’m clearly saving up to make comics about whenever I have the time to… Happy New Year!
