Proggy afternoon with Van Der Graaf Generator’s ‘World Record’ which I loved a lot more than anticipated…. Darker prog à la King Crimson but with a new-wave vocal at times like Bowie/Iggy and obs a big influence on PiL… gnarly brass action throughout and killer drum sound from Rockfield giving the whole thing a huge energy and embrace… thanks to @davidwrenchmusic for this crispy pressing which also has a great liner-note ad from the label warning of record piracy and celebrating Jerry Lee Lewis for trashing a whole counterfeit tape display at a service station. Kind of perfect. #progvinyl #vinylcat #33rpm #catsandvinyl #recordcollection

Sick day today so listening to @wearedelasoul “De La Soul Is Dead” - the second album that signalled the end of the Daisy Age… ‘Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)’ video on Top of The Pops stood out at the edge of the 90’s…. Prince Paul’s beats darker, with the lyrics… tape is a great way to listen to the album (especially this UK #firstpressing via @biglifemanagement / @tommyboyrecords which has all the original samples intact) with the ‘read along adventure’ skits hearing of the trashing of the demo tape in favour of Hammer which is also a comic on the fold out inner sleeve. It does miss a couple of tracks from the CD version thought (but less than the vinyl) including the darkest ‘my brother’s a basehead’…. But incredibly on-point production and rhymes moving things forward and showing that they were a career band, not a one trick pony… and it got that early 5 mics and might actually be a better listen than the debut. #hiphopvinyl #recordcollection #tapecollection #catsandrecords

A new one now… debut album from @dagmarzuni re-issued after its tape run by @ad93rec on beautiful ‘oxblood’ vinyl thanks to @roughtrade Magickal psychedelic folk with reassuring tape hiss showing that after all these years you can still conjure new and interesting dynamics from a tascam 4-track. ‘Even God Gets Stuck in Devotion’ (both times) and ‘Photography the Hard Way’ amongst the highlights of this incredible album ‘In filth your mystery is kingdom / far smile peasant in yellow music’ #vinyl #vinylcollection #33rpm #catsandvinyl #vinylcollector

Nightdrifting to Don Cherry’s untouchable ‘Mu’; a Japanese first pressing compiling parts 1+2… stripped back to the earthy heart of the music, Don on Trumpet and other percussion and Ed Blackwell on drums, take what the free-avant-garde work they did with Ornette Coleman and strip it right back so they can take off together - dancing through genres- American folk, African polyrhythms, Latin phrasing and even Asian Melodies to celebrate unity and mysticism. Essential pair. #jazzvinyl #rarevinyl #vinylcat #33rpm #vinylcollection

A debut from @attempted.martyr with their unedited @dinkededition on @muterecords Massively distinctive new band who actually nail the character pieces with melodic exceptional post-hardcore that has the right balance of the mathier microtonal trend at the moment, but rooted in an emotional and authentic space… just a viscerally exciting new band of substance.

The finest hour from @fallsoundarchive an album as a novel that always has something to reveal in these twisted tales of resentment and identity confusion from a true poet and band playing for their lives. Moving on from the ‘well intentioned hippies’ that ran Rough Trade, the band tried out fledging label ‘Kamera’ recording with a double drummer line up in Iceland and Hitchin… and somehow cramming an hour of music into a single #33rpm LP. The low-fi template that inspired Pavement who covered the controversial ‘The Classical’, the ‘Da Da Da’ nod of ‘Fortress/Deer Park’ that Elastica then lifted, the first incarnation of ‘Hip Priest’ that Demme licensed for the lambs, and a sonic manifesto that launched a million terrible copyists today… but this is genius so it all passes! A classic album! Perfect groundbreaking artwork! HEX ENDUCATION HOUR BY THE FALL This is a German first pressing on ‘Outline’… and totally relevant right now- ‘Who Makes the Nazi’s? Intellectual halfwits!’ #indievinyl #rarevinyl #catsandvinyl #recordcollecting

Sunday afternoon sketching with the gang and listening to @sonicyouth_official ‘Sister’… I know for a lot of people this is *the* one, but I never connected as much, I think due to the recording/production, which to me is quite boxy sounding, and sandwiched between ‘Evol’ which on any given day might be my fave for sonics and strums and of course the iconic ‘Daydream Nation’…. The material is unreal though - ‘Schizophrenia’ showcasing their developing songwriting, the riffage of ‘Catholic Block’ and the first vocal duet of ‘Kotton Krown’, all hanging around a Philip K Dick concept album form around his embryonic birth twin sister. This is the rare #firstpressing on Blast First which has some subsequently c*snored photos on the front and back cover, along with some badass Kern continuations, and a label catalogue too… #sonicyouth #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #catsandvinyl @thurstonmoore58 @kimletgordon @leeranaldo @steveshelley

Just arrived @bewithrecords doing the world a favour and reissuing an unattainable grail for the first time Gap Magione’s ‘Diana in the Autumn Wind’ which of course you know from the depth of its sampled legacy - from @dillatracks @talibkweli67 @qtiptheabstract @madlib and all the best. The album is some fruity Latin-tinged funky jazz featuring Tony Levin and Steve Gadd amongst others and sounds so full of life and vigour! #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #rarevinyl #hiphopvinyl #catsandvinyl

This all time grail fell into my arms this weekend… Annette Peacock’s debut ‘I’m the One’. We’re all full of hype, and overuse the term, but when I think of truly unique records, it’s like Trout Mask Replica, Lorca, Bitches Brew and probably this. A melding of jazz, funk, folk and balladry with the most exceptional vocals… they’ll break you and turn you inside out. Truly pioneering with applying the Moog to her own vocals and somehow approaching it in a way that’s never really been taken forward, or further, since this was released in ‘72. It’s perfect. Will make you feel if you have any kind of heart. This is a first pressing on Dynaflex as was the way in the day but sounds fucking rad. All the emotions. Look at that shiny cover too - you can tell that Leary was about. #rarevinyl #vinylcollection #catsandvinyl #vinylcollector #vinylcat

Happy @recordstoreday ! #rsd2026 which was the perfect excuse to pop to @roughtradedenmarkst and grab this long out of print delight from @teenagefanclubofficial and @jad.fair on @mergerecords with a cheeky bonus 7”! This is a gloriously romantic album with Velvets inspired jams backing the thoughts of true love conquering all, even the classic Universal Studios monsters…. Utterly life affirming stuff. I bought the original CD as a student with £20 that @courtneylove gave me to ‘buy my seat’ at Trash one night and that was money well spent. #indievinyl #vinylcat #catsandvinyl #chonkycat @roughtrade

Following on with another underrated album from one of the greatest to ever do it… @iggypopofficial reunited with James Williamson of the Stooges mk2 and Scott Thurston who hit the keys on Metallic KO when they weren’t being hit by bottles…. Following the classic Bowie run of Raw Power and the first two solo LPs, this was Osterberg out on his own on a new label and showing UP. ‘I’m Bored’ is one of his greatest singles, ‘Five Foot One’ (I’m not gonna grow any more) is his sardonic best but ‘Don’t Look Down’, later covered by @davidbowie and ‘The Endless Sea’, covered by @catpowerofficial are also deep brilliance… balancing that punk funk guitar and sax spender with a dismantling of machismo. I mean a total genius isn’t he? #catsandvinyl #vinylcollecting #vinylcollection #33rpmclub #vinyladdict

The final in the trilogy of the ‘Patti Smith Group’ ‘Wave’ from @thisispattismith is an underrated gem, preceding a temporary retirement. Bizarrely knocked at the time for leaning into more ‘commercial territories’ with @the_todd_rundgren producing, rather it’s a pure gateway into unprotected open-songwriting of the personal and political - from the Jean Genet quote on the cover, the unabashed love tribute ‘Frederick’ and the now popularised follow-up-hit ‘Dancing Barefoot’… the intense ‘Revenge’ and punk-probing of ‘Citizen Ship’, here in a running order swap with her cover of ‘So You Want to Be (A Rock and Roll Star)’ giving a framework for free expression as ‘Gloria’ did on the debut and the extreme ‘Seven Ways of Going’. Banging French First Pressing on Pathe Marconi via Arista with awesome collaged insert. #punkvinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinylmeowclub #vinylcat
