Our jury member Grit Wolany has selected Quantum Global Organoid Orchestra [qGOO] by transLAB and n‑D::StudioLab as her Golden Ticket. A week ago, it was fantastic to meet Iason Paterakis in person at Global Fusion in Barcelona, and today we are excited to meet more of the collaborators behind this work in a live conversation and to explore the project. In qGOO, lab-grown brain organoids–living clusters of neural cells without consciousness–are connected to high-density microelectrode arrays. Their spontaneous electrical activity is translated in real time into sound, image, and spatial composition. During a live performance in Toronto, EEG signals from a performer were captured and sent back to the installation at transLAB in Santa Barbara, where they further modulated the evolving audiovisual composition. In this way, a closed loop emerges between organoid data, algorithms, and human brain activity. “Quantum Global Organoid Orchestra (qGOO) is an experimental art–science collaboration that links living neural tissue, generative media, and networked human participation to explore new forms of emergent creativity across species and systems.” @gritney describes what moves her most about the work: it raises questions without spelling them out. What is intelligence? What is expression? And what happens when we stop deciding in advance who these concepts belong to? Perhaps this is what art can offer here: a sense of wonder at what emerges when boundaries between the living and the digital, between laboratory and stage, between author and material become permeable. A live conversation about qGOO will take place today on Instagram – 9 a.m. Los Angeles, 7 p.m. Berlin. Join us with your questions. ✨ We’re excited to share that Simulacra Naturae – Entangled Biomes will be presented at the @acmsiggraph 2026 Art Gallery, Los Angeles Convention Center. The work is a multisensory installation exploring how aesthetic experience emerges through the interaction of biological activity, generative algorithms, and embodied agents. Driven by brain organoid data, the project unfolds as a living ecosystem where neural dynamics, computation, and human interaction co-evolve across time and material scales. Developed with brain organoid data from the Kosik Neurobiology Lab at UCSB. Produced by Metaesthetica (supported by @sbcast ) in collaboration with @mat_ucsb transLAB and supported by @expressivecomputationlab , MAT PhD students and alumni. @nefeliman @mertoka @viscousvoid @deejay_tekton @nulltools @stejaraiulia We are grateful to be part of this collective effort and to share this work with the SIGGRAPH community. See you all in LA this summer! #SIGGRAPH2026 #MediaArts #BioArt #GenerativeArt #InteractiveArt UCSB MATUCSB Metaesthetica

"Simulacra Naturae" was showcased as part of the IEEE VISAP Collective Care (@visapnet ) exhibition at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. This collaborative installation, by MAT PhD students/alumni Nefeli Manoudaki, Iason Paterakis, Mert Toka and Diarmid Flatley, explores the brain organoid activity that drives simulated ecosystems and generative forms. Additionally, the team presented a research paper related to the "Simulacra Naturae" project during the IEEE VISAP paper session. You can find the paper here: /abs/2509.02924. "Simulacra Naturae" is a collaboration between MAT’s transLAB, led by professor Marcos Novak, and the Kosik Neurobiology Lab, led by professor Kenneth Kosik, with additional support from the @expressivecomputationlab , led by professor Jennifer Jacobs, as well as the MAT AlloPlex Studio/Lab at SBCAST.

We are pleased to announce that the upcoming exhibition IEEE VISAP includes our latest collaborative installation, "Simulacra Naturae." This piece explores the brain organoid activity that drives simulated ecosystems and generative forms. This work will be featured in the IEEE VISAP "Collective Care" exhibition and will be installed alongside other exciting artwork installations at the atrium of the Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien (University of Applied Arts, Vienna). We are also presenting a paper at the IEEE VISAP paper session on our Simulacra Naturae work. Simulacra Naturae is a collaboration between the @mat_ucsb MAT transLAB led by professor Marcos Novak and the Kosik Neurobiology Lab led by professor Ken Kosik, with additional support from the Expressive Computation Lab (@expressivecomputationlab ) led by professor Jennifer Jacobs, and the MAT AlloPlex Studio/Lab at @sbcast . The Media Arts and Technology Program at UCSB (MAT@UCSB ) presents latent•ville, our 2023 EoYS (End of Year Show), in two events: 6-9 pm June 1 @sbcast 513 Garden St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 & 6-9 pm June 9 @ucsantabarbara (Elings Hall, Mesa Rd, Santa Barbara, CA 93106) Our theme this year, latent•ville, is a play on latent space, a central concept in machine learning, and Alphaville, a reference to the classic 60s movie that anticipated the advent of artificial intelligence. A -ville being a space where people commune, latent•ville is the latent space we live in now. As AI's awesome and terrible power colors our lives and pervades our public and private spaces, and even the spaces of our imagination, we ask, what is art in latent•ville now? Both EoYS events will showcase our students' cutting-edge research and new media artworks and work from our MAT courses. — The June 1st SBCAST event will feature the work of MAT students at the new MAT AlloplexStudio@SBCAST , with extensive new projection mapping constituting a spectacular electronic audiovisual concert. — The June 9th Elings event will feature open laboratories: transLAB, Experimental Visualization Lab, Expressive Computation Lab, plus new immersive experiences in MAT's famous AlloSphere. No AI was harmed in the generation of this text.
