Over the past months, my practice has shifted, allowing colour to shape the direction of each piece. These works emerged from a desire to let go, reflecting a shift towards a more intuitive visual language.

Noa Verkeyn
Afgestudeerd aan KASK Gent in 2021, met een reeks tekeningen van klaprozen, werd de beeldende basis van de praktijk van Noa Verkeyn (°1997, België) gelegd. Haar werk vertrekt vanuit een uitgesproken, kleurrijke mindset en schetst een soort visuele utopie. In dit afstudeerproject worden bloemen vastgelegd op het hoogtepunt van hun bloei, maar met vuile schoenen aan, een schop in de hand en hun wortels schaamteloos zichtbaar.
Door deze bloemen te vermenselijken, nodigt Verkeyn de toeschouwer uit om de relatie tussen het zelf, de ander en de natuur te observeren. De werken zijn tegelijk aangenaam en speels, maar ook geladen. Bloemen die nonchalant hun schoppen vasthouden, alsof ze op het punt staan hun wortels uit de voedende grond te trekken. De verpersoonlijking van de natuur fungeert hier als spiegel en als allegorie voor de condition humaine. Deze symboliek vormt het fundament van Verkeyns artistieke praktijk.
In de afgelopen jaren breidde haar werk zich uit met nieuwe motieven, waaronder harten, kristallen glazen en doornige stengels. Deze elementen verrijken haar beeldtaal en dragen bij aan een verhaal over hoe te bestaan in een wereld waarin mystiek opnieuw moet worden uitgevonden. Door het medium van de tekening radicaal ernstig te nemen, plaatst Verkeyn zich binnen een ogenschijnlijk nieuwe traditie in de hedendaagse kunst.
Steeds meer kunstenaars tillen de tekening op van een historisch ondergewaardeerd medium—vaak gezien als louter schets of voorbereiding—naar een autonome kunstvorm. Ook Noa Verkeyn benut de tekening ten volle, als volwaardig middel om een eigen, hedendaagse visuele taal te ontwikkelen.

On the ledge — over the course of a year, I created a total of eight, special drawings. Not on paper, but straight onto the walls of an apartment I visited just once. There, a worn ladder would take me and my pencils up to the ceiling. As I drew, I grew closer to the space, slowly adding to it in my own way. Happy to share some details of the exhibition.

Engraving on plexiglass with a pencil drawing
One month has flown since my return from Donostia. So grateful for my art residency through @morphoantwerp and @tabakalera_donostia . For the very first time, I could fully immerse myself into my practice.
I drew, read and walked. Back and forth between my atelier and the ocean. I floated from paper to wood to plexi. And everything I witnessed filled my atelier. Tints, ornaments and the light at sundown. Thrilled to show these pieces in the near future 💝
