Stef Driesen, Undertone Magenta (2026). On the occasion of the publication of SD16–26, a new monograph bringing together ten years of Stef Driesen’s practice, the gallery presents a selection of recent works that reflect the continued evolution of his painting. Working without a predetermined image or fixed composition, Driesen allows each painting to emerge through an intuitive process of layering, overpainting and removal. What disappears often remains present as a trace, a colour beneath the surface, a form that briefly returns, a gesture that continues to shape the work. In recent years, his paintings have become increasingly open and reduced, while maintaining their strong physical presence. In Undertone Magenta, colour takes on a heightened role, unfolding through soft transitions, shifting contours and layered transparencies. The work exists in a space between abstraction and recognition, where meaning develops gradually through rhythm, undertones and subtle movement across the surface. Bernd Lohaus’ solo exhibition The Way Things Settle. Working with wood, stone and paper, Lohaus developed a language of remarkable restraint, where material, gesture and thought remain closely intertwined. His works invite slow attention, not through spectacle but through silence, weight and relation. Meaning unfolds in fragments, through objects that seem to hold both presence and absence. For this solo presentation, a selection from his oeuvre has been made in collaboration with curator Brenda Guesnet. Together, the exhibition reflects on Lohaus’ practice as an open dialogue between self and world, where form becomes a poetic field and each work suggests a space for encounter, contemplation and shared experience. Today and tomorrow, the gallery is open to discover our current exhibitions. 1. Until June 21, 2026 Bernd Lohaus, Untitled, 1974 Paint on canvas 270 x 180 cm (x2) 2. From concept to completion 🎬 Step behind the scenes of the Art Brussels 2026 entrance commission ✨ For this edition, Belgian artist @natasja.mabesoone reimagined the fair’s threshold with “Cher mouths Mary, Mary mouths Cher”, a site-specific installation that transformed Art Brussels entrance into a striking, immersive passage. In this video, Art Brussels Managing Director Nele Verhaeren reflects on the importance of inviting an artist to shape visitors’ first impressions of the fair and explains the choice of Mabesoone. The artist, in turn, offers insights into how the project was brought to life and how visitors responded to the the work once it was unveiled. #NatasjaMabesoone is represented by @gallerysofievandevelde Wallpaper production kindly supported by @masureel Video by @stevebrouwers #ArtBrussels #ArtBrussels2026

The opening of The Wunderwall Enlarged takes place this Thursday at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde. On view from 14 May through 21 June 2026. ⸻ A world without young artists would be quieter, but profoundly poorer in imagination, critique and hope. They are the ones who question, experiment and shape new ways of seeing. At the core of the gallery’s vision lies a long-term commitment to supporting artists and creating space for practices to develop over time. What began as an intuitive collection of small-scale works by emerging artists gradually evolved into The Wunderwall: a living platform where new voices come into dialogue. With The Wunderwall Enlarged, this vision expands further. Artists return, the walls transform into a floor-to-ceiling installation, and the exhibition space becomes a reflection of how art lives, in constant movement, shaped by exchange, attention and connection. The opening coincides with Antwerp Art Weekend, bringing together artists, collectors, art lovers and new visitors in a moment where the city comes alive through contemporary art. — Learn more about The Wunderwall presentation on our website: sofievandevelde.be Videocredits: @stevebrouwers @sofie.van.de.velde Adjusted opening hours during Antwerp Art Weekend ✨ Thursday 12:00 — 21:00 Friday 12:00 — 18:00 Saturday 12:00 — 18:00 Sunday 12:00 — 18:00 #thewunderwall #thewunderwallenlarged #gallerysofievandevelde #antwerpartweekend #contemporaryart

A look back at the collaboration between Mattias De Leeuw and Natan during Art Brussels. For De Leeuw, painting is a way of holding on to moments, of observing the world closely and returning to it through image. Within the ateliers of Natan, he immersed himself in the rhythm of making: the gestures, the concentration, the quiet attention that shapes each garment. What emerged was not a direct depiction, but an atmosphere. Figures and spaces unfold with a light, intuitive touch, balancing between presence and memory. The works reflect a shared sensitivity to craft, where time, care and process become visible. This collaboration brought together two practices grounded in attention, where painting became a continuation of making, and where moments were not only captured, but gently prolonged. Stef Driesen presents new work alongside the launch of his latest publication, opening soon at the gallery. Working on large-scale canvases, Driesen builds paintings through layers of washes, often in greys with subtle inflections of colour. His surfaces remain in flux, where traces and transparencies give rise to shifting spaces and bodies. Edges dissolve, forms emerge and recede, inviting a sensory way of looking that moves between distance and touch. In untitled (2025), these qualities come together in a composition that feels both atmospheric and physical. The painting unfolds, holding attention through nuance and rhythm rather than fixed image, allowing perception to remain open and responsive. On the occasion of the exhibition, Driesen will present his new book, accompanied by a selection of works on view. May 14- until June 1, 2026 Stef Driesen, untitled, 2025, oil on canvas, 170 x 130 cm For inquiries, please contact [email protected] Learn more about the exhibition on our website: sofievandevelde.be @sofie.van.de.velde @stefdriesen . Bernd Lohaus’ solo exhibition The Way Things Settle opens on May 14. For this solo presentation, a selection from Lohaus’ oeuvre has been made in collaboration with curator Brenda Guesnet. The exhibition centres on a series of action paintings from the 1970’s, for which the artist thrust handfuls of pure pigment against the walls of his studio, leaving behind explosive bursts of colour that transformed the space into a three-dimensional canvas. These works, which can never be created in the same way twice, emphasise the aspect of unpredictability in Lohaus’ work, with the intention of foregrounding the lightness, vulnerability and openness towards transformation that characterises his diverse oeuvre. In his ‘pigment works’, Lohaus extends his practice directly into space. The work resists objecthood, instead unfolding as a subtle intervention that activates the architecture itself. It exists as a trace rather than a fixed form, where material and context become inseparable. May 14 – June 21, 2026 Bernd Lohaus, pigment on wall and floor, 1975 For inquiries, please contact [email protected] Learn more about the exhibition on our website: sofievandevelde.be @sofie.van.de.velde #gallerysofievandevelde #berndlohaus #soloexhibition #contemporaryart #minimalart #openingsoon

Dittmar Viane Last week to visit Eye to Eye at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde. In The Jester’s Poulaine (2026), the tensions explored throughout the exhibition come together: between care and control, admiration and responsibility. As in many of Viane’s paintings, what begins as a direct encounter gradually reveals something more ambiguous and unsettled. Rendered with a light, playful touch and a hint of satire, the work balances humour with discomfort, inviting viewers to reflect on their own position in relation to the other, human or animal. If you have not yet seen the exhibition, this is your final week.
