In light of the most recent @rtswales Awards, I wanted to share an achievement I’m proud of in an attempt to advocate for myself a little better!
In 2023, I had the honour of accepting the RTS Award for my animated short “Matchiko” (named after my cat🐈⬛ )
Animation is still such a huge part of my life and as my past self said, I truly hope it will be for the rest of my life! I have come so far since this day, and I’m excited and nervous for what the future holds!
I may be posting about this 3 years late, but better late than not at all!!

Kinder Than Cuts screening at ‘Are You Ok’ @liafanimation programme last night with post panel discussion. Thanks to all the animators that came down! This AniJam protest animation was launched at @brightonanimation festival this year against the proposed welfare cuts against people living with disabilities.
Here is Kate’s statement on the panel about the origins of the film and the pip cuts:
(The proposed cuts were cutting) benefits for people that were disabled but it was concentrating more on people that were neurodivergent and living with mental health problems so more unseen disabilities. I was going on quite a lot of protests at the time in Brighton and Sarah saw on my instagram stories I was going on a lot of protests so it was actually all her idea she said ‘why don’t we do a protest animation?’. I also run the animation festival in Brighton so on the launch of the event there I put forward a call out for animators so it was an AniJam protest.
But in terms of the origins in terms of my own personal experience my brother lives with mental illness and he was hospitalised in March and I just have quite a lot of personal experience of living and supporting people who live with mental illness. A lot of the time people that are living with mental illness they’re hanging on by a thread and sometimes just getting through the day without wanting to end your own life is an achievement. And to ask these people to go through a reassessment of pip and disability assessments, if you didn’t want to kill yourself to begin with to go through one of these pip or disability assessments you’d want to kill yourself afterwards. I’ve sat in the other room overhearing these kind of assessments (which are humiliating and dehumanising). And to put this forward to some of the most vulnerable people in society seems so inhumane and completely inappropriate. So it was from a place of rage that we both decided to make this animation.

PIP and disability benefits are essential for so many people living with disabilities to have support and be able to access things like medication, mobility aids, mental health support, carers and so so so much more. Cutting back on this support will cost lives, and it’s so important to speak up.
