vowels References : Chantal Jahchan + Noah Baker
For those who’ve consulted the books at the vowels Research Library, it’s known that 76 Bowery provides a quiet and reflective space for solo work. However, having a companion to browse with can provide a second opinion, a pair of extra hands to carry a heavy book, or a classic study break banter. With this in mind, it was only a matter of time that we hosted our first References episode with two guests.
Chantal Jahchan [
@chantaljahchan ] is a Lebanese-American independent illustrator and designer. Previously at Pentagram, Jahchan’s work has enriched stories for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The New York Times Magazine, earning her recognition in the New York Times’ Year in Illustration feature multiple times over. Research heavy and rooted in social and cultural discourse, her practice has also produced a number of book covers, including Andreas Malm’s « How to Blow Up a Pipeline, » landing on NYT’s Best Book Covers of 2021. Jahchan always starts with a ‘sketching process’ of reading articles, followed by Wikipedia rabbit holes, and piecing together ‘precious, raw archival material’ to build images that carry both context and texture.
Noah Baker [
@noahbaker.studio ] describes his approach to design projects as with both digital and analogue research. He reminds himself to separate from the endless well of images on are.na and return to the couple’s growing home library, 80% of which belongs to Noah (according to Chantal.) An independent graphic designer and art director, Baker’s work spans film titles, visual brand identities, album artwork, and posters for clients including A24, Nike, Apple, Warp Records, and Verso Books. Baker developed a deep appreciation for music at a young age, due in part to the sounds and visuals of his father’s DIY 80s pop-rock band. That influence has drawn Baker toward helping shape the visual language in music by collaborating with Jamie XX, Jacques Greene, Zack Fox, and Nowadays to name a few.
