Since I was a kid, stop motion felt like actual sorcery to me. The idea that you could breathe life into something still, frame by frame, and make it move, make it feel. That never left me. Not once. I just never imagined I’d get to finally live that dream alongside one of my best friends. @douglaslittleco , I have never in my life met a mind like yours. The worlds you conjure, the details you dream into existence, the way your imagination bends reality into something altogether more beautiful and strange. Working inside your vision felt like being handed a key to a door I didn’t know existed. And none of it would have been what it is without my extraordinary co-director @nihildeclarandum . You amplified the magic in every way! Behind us was a team of incredible people who poured something real into every single frame. The result is Rhubarb Thief for @hereticparfum . And I am so deeply proud of it. There’s something in this piece I still can’t quite put into words. It reaches back into childhood and pulls something out of you. Wonder, maybe. Or the memory of wonder. Civil Service Dir. Tiffany Kimmel Screened for Final Girls Berlin Film Festival as part of their social horror shorts block, Civil Service follows a ruthless officer in the department of family services. It's a surrealist view of real world issues that impact those in need of support. Writer/Director Tiffany Kimmel opted to air on the side of toxic masuclinity for our lead, showing blatant abuses of power and using language that is deemed derogatory. This gender inequality and power dynamic flows throughout the film, and the choice of a dystopian setting only adds to the stark, cold nature of the civil servant. There are some phenomenal artistic directions here, depicting the female receptionist as a miniature in a desk drawer only adding to the heightened value of self importance the cival servant holds so dear. Similarities between prominant figures in film and literary history do not go unnoticed; the hauntings of Ebenezer Scrooge, the narcissism of Patrick Bateman, the mother issues of Norman Bates. Inspiration for the latter is clear with our officer's family bonds playing a key role in the film's structure and narration. The performances here were great, with special nod to Eric Toms who is captivating whilst evoking a raw hatred for this character. Last year I was introduced to Nathan Crooker as he was looking for a co-director/co-producer to put together an animated short for Douglas Little @hereticparfum called, 'Rhubarb Thief.' The visuals had already been designed by the Heretic team—with an incredible Rabbit puppet being designed and fabricated by Erik Sanko—along with exquisite hand-painted paper sets by Johanna Burke & Pryde. All Heretic needed was an animation team to help make their dream a reality. Personally, as a director/producer, I love building teams around a strong vision. Douglas and Nathan share a similar gothic sensibility that really speaks to the animated worlds I enjoy. It felt like kismet. Each and every person who contributed to this project brought a little bit of their spirit to the most heartwarming gothic fairytale. I am so grateful for Nathan @thecrooker for his camaraderie and collaborative spirit—and to Douglas @douglaslittleco for trusting us to help make his beautiful world a reality.
