Woolgathering with Jessica Grindstaff. We love looking back at stories told with some of our favourite clients, collaborators, and communities. We’re sharing these here as a series called Woolgathering. Today we’re revisiting an interview with @jessicagrindstaff of @phantomlimbcompany , published through our @inwildair project. In Wild Air was a weekly newsletter that invited guests to share six things they love. Jessica shared her love of writer Karl Ove Knausgaard, Peter Zumthor’s architecture, poetry, soaps, and ceramics, but it was her dream cocktail party guest list that we keep returning to: “Erik Sanko and I have been having a conversation for 20 years about what it would be like if such and such (insert deceased luminary here) were to meet such and such and what would they talk about. We decided to make a short film that is a cocktail party where all of these people are invited and finally meeting. They are of course all marionettes on an intricate lush set. Their conversations are collaged from pre-existing recorded dialogue of their actual voices. The big surprise is when the camera pans up revealing the puppeteers, I won’t spoil it. These are the people: Harry Houdini, Louise Bourgeois, Groucho Marx, Alfred Hitchcock, Hellen Keller, Frida Khalo, Vladimir Nabokov, Ernest Shackleton, Georgia O’Keefe, Diane Arbus, Jean Michel Basquiat, Bill Baird, Joseph Beuys, TS Eliot, Derek Wolcott, Claude CahoonJohn BergerSalvador DaliPina BauschDavid Bowie, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele, James Baldwin, John Lennon, Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston, Captain Beefheart, Oliver Sacks, Joseph Campbell, Billie Holiday, Virginia Wolf, William S Burroughs, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Pablo Neruda, Italo Calvino, Maurice Sendak, Edward Gorey, Mapplethorpe, Charles And Rae Eames, Shostakovich, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Nina Simone, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Samuel Becket”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ✨Lark Ocean Sanko✨6 Years and not a moment wasted! A girl who knows how to eat a hotdog on a ferry in Norway with gusto and will down a dozen oysters while you get up to wash your hands... She’s fast, she’s electric, she’s funny, she can catch an inordinate amount of fish in one outing and she loves John Denver, Paul Simon and Nina Simone. She is so thoroughly Lark and what an absolute privilege it is to get to stand by this dancing will o’ the wisp. If you look up tonight, you may catch the Leonids, clearly coming down for a look at their sparkly sister Lark. 💫💫💫

I never could’ve guessed that life would deliver me such an incredible gift as 25 years married to this remarkable person. To recall all the things that we’ve been through (9.11, creating a theater company, two magical children, the losses of beloved family and friends and the many new friends we love and hold so dear) is overwhelming. It’s difficult to find words to express the depth of my love, admiration and gratitude to Jessica Grindstaff.

#EeikSanko @skeletonkeyerik ’s new band #KnifeThrower @knifethrowertheband is one of the most interesting bands in NYC. Tonight’s show at #MainDrag @maindragmusic @live_at_maindrag was my second time seeing them and I’m still of the same opinion. I don’t even know how to describe them accurately, which makes them even more interesting and should tell you how original they are. Two standing drummers, two horn players and Erik on his 8 string bass singing and playing bass and percussion with one foot. It’s as if Primus molded into one with Cop Shoot Cop and lost the slapping in favor of percussive grooves, but then add the horns and the singing = Knife Thrower is brilliant and my only regret is I’m not producing their new record :) …But it’s coming…

Norway so far, Freya turned 13 at her great, great, great grandfathers farm in Tvedestrand, now with Jessica and Lark driving across the south to Bergen where my great grandfather came from while I’m up north in Stamsund at Figurteatret i Nordland on a puppetry residency for two weeks until they come to join me for the third week. We are all in heaven.

On October 4th we are debuting our new line-up at Market Hotel and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be playing our first show with Los Microwaves since the very early 80’s. Our new rhythm section is downtown NYC to the core. The great Erik Sanko (Skeleton Key, SQÜRL, John Cale, Yoko Ono, The Contortions, Ui) is on bass and the one and only Clem Waldmann (Ui, Loser’s Lounge) will be behind the kit. We’ve missed you and are ready to rock. Score tickets in bio. @skeletonkeyerik @los_microwaves @microwave_buddha @market.hotel @patplace1 @sleycynthia @wharfcatrecords
