SHOUTOUT #30
VFX
@nightroadstudios
VFX was a wild RIDE. After directing the film, I dove straight in behind the computer to do the VFX. As a VFX artist I knew exactly what needed to be done practically and what we needed to do with VFX. We approached this film hoping to do as many practical effects as possible because I firmly believed it would give us the best results, mood, look, and feeling. I will always vouch for that in my films.
The trip scene was done with mostly practical effects. Filming paint, moss, bark, and different liquids in water tanks. Such a fun day of playing with the help of
@eronsheean @fauvography @vincentvandenbroek And thanks a lot
@rfx_propmaking for allowing us to play and mess around in your respected studio! Of course, lots of mist and fog elements shot by
@kees.film and
@luukdek Keeluu smoke deluxe, the launch of the ultimate fog element package.
There’s a lot of invisible VFX in the film to make it all look moodier like a classic medieval, gloomy painting. On my own, I ended up doing over 141 shots, a true marathon that wasn’t easy. I was toeing the edge in terms of health and sanity but the material we captured sparked me everyday with joy and commitment. I’m extremely grateful for the help of
@houstonsharp for doing such incredible iconic matte paintings and digital sculpting work during the post, as well as
@tomheddell helping out on the Gelo tree, eye replacement and climax sequence with some true epic comp action! Speaking of the epic climax,
@lookslikesimon creating true magic with his amazing fluid sims and wood chip, ground moss explosion epicness, smoke Sims etc etc in
@sidefxhoudini . A firework show of moss, splinters and blood! What a flavor!!!
