Rich and I get asked a lot what we’re listening to while building new products—so during this holiday break, I wanted to share one that’s been on repeat: my most-played albums of 2024. I’m always chasing new music, and this one came in late but hit hard—Rome by The National. They’ve been one of my favorite live bands for 20 years, and this is the first recording (for me) that truly captures that feeling. Bryan Devendorf drives it forward, while Matt Berninger brings a raw, urgent energy that cuts through. If you’re new to them, start with Bloodbuzz Ohio and Fake Empire—they’ll pull you right in. Electronic music has been a more constant source of joy in my life than any other genre of music, so you’ll have to excuse me raising the tempo on Christmas Day with what’s hands down my most listened to album of 2024, Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points’, beautiful and pulsating “Cascade”. Yes, this is an unashamedly dance floor-oriented collection, but there’s just as much, if not more, intricacy and craft on show here as in his previous work. “Ocotillo” is a definite highlight, but every track here has a job to do in this all too brief filler-free 57-minute dance music opus. From a work perspective, I find this album ideal for assessing staging, accuracy, layering, and, most importantly, timing, which is perhaps the biggest challenge in convincingly reproducing streamed music.
