Thank you to everyone who attended the Miya Miya Film Club x @neil.kumar screening of The Big City (Mahanagar) directed by Satyajit Ray. Another full room at @mothership.marrickville , and another night that felt quietly expansive. There's something about this film that settles into people slowly, and then all at once. Watching The Big City together, you could feel that shift happening in the room. Thank you to @neil.kumar for collaborating on this screening and shaping the night from the outset. His work, sitting at the intersection of typography, memory, and cultural inheritance, felt deeply aligned with not just the film, but Miya Miya as a whole, tracing how everyday lives carry history, and how change arrives in small, decisive steps. We're living in a moment where our lives, our stories, and our histories are so often made to feel disposable. What we're doing here each month is a small refusal of that. A space to gather, to pay attention, and to build an archive of our stories together. And it doesn't end in the room, it extends into materially supporting our diasporic communities who continue to endure violence, displacement, and erasure. Together we raised $1213.44, which has been split between @kathaindia and @auntiesfund , supporting work grounded in education, safety, and women's independence. Arati's journey in the film, stepping into work and reshaping the boundaries of home, felt as vital now as ever. A film made over sixty years ago still meeting us exactly where we are. Thank you to everyone who shared food, time, and space with us. Huge thank you to both @__thals and @greeneggsandhamza_ and their friends for feeding us so generously and making sure no one left hungry. Endless thanks to @mothership.marrickville , @neil.kumar , @pinkflamingocinema , @riaumadevi , @molgrrey , @jimbuluscrimbulus , and @phaedra_carantinos for making the night possible, @rdb_organization for providing a beautiful restoration of the film, and @jules.sarantis for capturing the night with her beautiful photos 📸 Thank you, and see you at the next one ❤️

Film flyers I designed for Mahanagar 1963 (The Big City) by Satyajit Ray. It was a pleasure to present this film in collaboration with @miyamiyafilmclub at Mothership Studios in Sydney. Inspired by the Satyajit Ray himself, a Graphic Designer prior to directing films, it only felt right to pay homage to the iconic director with a creation of my own. It was really special I could personally hand these to film goers, paying tribute to flyer sets that were once a staple of the cinema experience.

Tonight, @__thals and @greeneggsandhamza_ won't let you leave hungry. Knucklebones: a slow, South African lamb curry that is rich, tender, the kind of dish that's built over time and meant to be eaten the same way. With cumin rice, soaking it all in, holding everything together. Or Aloo Gobi: soft potatoes and cauliflower, spiced just right. Comforting in the best way. The kind of veg dish that never feels like a second option. Both plates come with braised cabbage and sambal. Something soft, something sharp. Balance. Heat. A little brightness cutting through. It's the kind of meal that feels like it's been cooked for a room, not an audience. Shared, generous, made to be eaten slowly. And then we settle into The Big City with @neil.kumar . Lights off, film on. See you soon ❤️ Artwork by @greeneggsandhamza_ 🔥

On Wednesday 15th April, @mothership.marrickville , Miya Miya Film Club x Neil Kumar present: মহানগর (Mahanagar / The Big City, India, 1963) directed by Satyajit Ray. This screening is presented in collaboration with @neil.kumar , whose practice sits at the intersection of typography, memory and cultural inheritance. Neil's work draws from vernacular design histories across the subcontinent, reclaiming visual languages many of us grew up around but rarely paused to notice. It feels fitting to hold Mahanagar alongside that lens: modernity arriving at the doorstep, tradition reshaping itself in real time. Set in 1960s Calcutta, Mahanagar follows Arati, a middle-class housewife who takes a job as a saleswoman to support her family, quietly unsettling the fragile architecture of patriarchy at home. What unfolds is subtle but seismic. A film about work, dignity, womanhood, and the courage it takes to step outside the line drawn for you. As always, this isn't just a screening. It's a gathering. On the night we'll be sharing food from @__thals and @greeneggsandhamza_ . Plates that feel like home, like aunties in the kitchen, like the hum of something familiar and generous. Donations will be split between @kathaindia , a Delhi-based organisation working in education, literacy and storytelling with children from underserved communities, and @auntiesfund , a Sydney-based volunteer-led organisation supporting South Asian women escaping domestic violence. Both organisations honour the spirit of Mahanagar: women’s agency, economic independence, and the transformative power of access. Your ticket includes a meal, drinks from @gazacola.au , and donations to @kathaindia and The Aunties Fund via @sydneycommunityfoundation , alongside covering venue, projector hire and film licensing. Mahanagar will screen in Bengali with English subtitles. Ray made this film over sixty years ago, but it feels startlingly current; the negotiation between care and ambition, the politics of income inside a marriage, and the invisible labour that props up the “respectable” household. Come sit with us in the big city. Tickets via the link in our bio. See you soon ❤️
