Hi! 👋🏾👋🏾 I’m playing a show this Saturday at China Cloud! It’s the first time I’ve performed since November and I’ll be playing this song for the first time ever. It’s called Language and I wrote it after my first time going to Ethiopia and it’s about feeling trapped by not being able to speak Amharic and feeling stuck on the outside of communication. I’m playing with a wonderful group including @thehabeshaman@lisacaym & @mileswong and we’d love to see you there! A tix link is in my bio ☺️☺️🎸🎸🎶
it is honestly surreal to finally share untangling with you 🧵🪡 this slow, healing piece carries years of movement, distance and closeness ~ a tender push & pull ~ an offering now on bandcamp, youtube, and here (links in profile) 💞
this song was woven into being with a vast amount of care and patience over the past 5 years by some truly beautiful, intentional folks 🧶 back in 2021, i wrote this song in one night on my toronto balcony ~ then @nebyoha transformed the demo into a truly rich sonic tapestry where my voice could truly find a home. after recording vocals in BC @fiddlehead_studios and a thoughtful, inspirational mix+master by @tupjohn these visuals were crafted last year in collab with @oriahw Nebyoha and @thehabeshaman … edited by me over a slow year … shared with you all now …
sometimes we just need a little more time to gather ourselves before we go outside again 🩵
NEW SHOW ALERT!!!
From being exposed to Motown, rock, and traditional Ethiopian music as a young boy, to discovering jazz, R&B, and classical in his college years, Nebyu Yohannes has digested a diverse artistic palette from which to draw from when creating. For the last several years, one of his musical priorities has been nebyoha, an eclectic singer-songwriter project that straddles Ethio-Jazz, Funk, Jazz & all points in-between.
Nebyu Yohannes - Vocals, guitar, trombone
Feven Kidane - Bass
Lisa Cay Miller - Keyboards
Miles Wong - Drums
This performance is part of the East Van Shuffle, a monthly Jazz series taking place at China Cloud in Chinatown. China Cloud is only accessible via a flight of stairs, and is not wheelchair accessible.

For this Black Futures Month, we wanted to spotlight a few local Black Culture Shifters that have made a rainy so-called Vancouver more welcoming & enjoyable for Black folks in more recent years through community events, performances, workshops, etc. 🖤 | Meet Nebyu Yohannes @nebyoha 🎶
Our Workshop Series continues at The Hargrove on February 23 with Feven Kidane & Nebyu Yohannes. Fresh from a trip to Ethiopia, the duo will bring firsthand experiences and reflections into an intimate workshop exploring Ethiopian music. 🇪🇹 @thehabeshaman@nebyoha
Catch them the night before at LOST DOG SUNDAYS (02/22) at The Hargrove, where under the name ረብሻ (Rebsha) the duo will fuse ambient textures and Black American Music with their East African heritage.
