The new Abramson Singers EP, Anything You Could’ve Been, is out today!
As with all Abramson Singers albums, it is customary to start with an a cappella piece. So here is Turn Into a Crisp, with lyrics harvested from the surrealist musings of my daughter, Alma, when she was around 4 years old and saying strange (and oddly profound) things.
Now the whole EP is out — Songs about middle-age, ambivalence, parenthood, and the paths you didn’t take (but always thought you might someday). Available to download on Bandcamp or you can stream it in all the places. *Links in bio*
Big thank yous to everyone who contributed to this project—my co-producer and guitarist @jvstarnes , the rest of my band: @d_gaucher on drums @tysonrnaylor on keys/synth/organ @mark.beaty.79 on bass and Colin Stewart on epic mixes @thehivecreativelabs and Elisa Pangsaeng @catpictures for the attention and care on the masters. And @luciendurey for the beautiful art works.
Thanks also to @davidsikula and @123fakestreetstudio for recording bass and drums respectively.
And happy birthday, @d_gaucher and @barbrastreisand ! Many more returns!

Release your Song! Writer’s block often happens when we try to force a finished product instead of following a process...
This summer, Samantha Parton (founding member of The Be Good Tanyas) and Leah Abramson host a workshop focused on the mechanics of getting started. You’ll learn daily exercises—like prompt-based writing, sound-walks, and free-writing—designed to bypass self-doubt and help you access your authentic voice.
What You’ll Learn
• Techniques to help you push through writer’s block, self-doubt, and other limiting patterns, allowing you to dig deeper and access your creativity when you feel stuck
• Tools to help you kickstart your creativity and inspire your songwriting
• Expanded awareness of how melody, lyrics, chords, and form work together to create memorable songs
• The confidence to listen for your own unique lyric voice, trust your intuition, and articulate your ideas in a way that feels authentic, inspired, and original
• Connection and community with fellow songwriters
Whether you have a folder full of half-finished lyrics or have never written a line, this week is about building a sustainable songwriting practice! Join us for five days of focused creativity!

Coming on April 24! It’s been a few years putting this together at my snail’s pace, while navigating the twists and turns of midlife. But there wouldn’t have been anything at all without the encouragement and skills of my pal and co-producer Jason Starnes — I was deeply ambivalent about putting new songs out into the world (maybe I still am!), but his low pressure/good vibes approach made recording into a fun creative project again — diy experimenting with new sounds (starring Jason’s synth collection, touch-tone simulators, and his neighbours’ wind chimes) and just making the music we wanted, for ourselves, and now for whoever wants to listen. Shoutout to @barbrastreisand — her birthday is April 24 and she doesn’t believe in coincidences (I’ve been listening to her autobiography, so I know!). It’s also our drummer @d_gaucher ‘s birthday, so I guess the stars are truly aligned. Big thanks to @luciendurey for the beautiful album cover and song artworks! More music, credits and thank yous coming on April 24.
The world is crazier than ever. When we come together in creative communion, we build resilience. I think this summer’s Hollyhock songwriting retreat is going to be extra powerful as we are all reeling from the seemingly never ending hits by the forces who seem bent on destroying all that is life-affirming and joyful. I dunno. I feel very fortunate to get to co-lead this beautiful gathering of creative souls @hollyhocklife with @leahabe each year. Come join us this August! We’ll be digging into songwriting in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, Cortes Island, perched at the northern edge of the Salish Sea in coastal British Columbia. Alongside lots of songwriting, there will be forest walks, beach walks, oyster feasts at the water’s edge, and harmony singing in the hot tub. If kayaking is your thing, you can do that too. The aim is to nurture and focus our creative energies - that’s when the magic happens. 🐚 We’d love to have you join us.

One week until the second single from my new EP comes out! I wrote “Can You See It Now” when I did a writing residency a few years ago — the first time I’d had time and space like that since my daughter was born. When I wrote this song, I was working on a choral project, but the residency’s keyboard needed fixing, and all they had was a beat up classical guitar hanging out in the studio. So I picked it up and wrote this song about the rooms in my head… but let me explain.
I’d been thinking a lot about how we all experience the world a little differently from each other. For instance, I have a legitimately terrible memory for events, names and people (apologies!). But I also have a nearly photographic memory for spaces, and can see most rooms I know in my mind in a detailed way. Sometimes this visual/spatial memory is the only thing that helps me to remember events — if I walk myself through a room, I can remember what happened in it. “Can You See It Now” is a song that explores what we see in our heads, as well as the inscrutability of others’ brains — how much can we really know about how even our closest people see the world? I was also trying to get away from the chord progressions my fingers naturally gravitated towards, so I made some weird rules for myself. See if you can figure them out next week!
Our first installment of the Workshops Series at The Hargrove concludes with Robyn Jacob and Leah Abramson talking about songwriting and the creative process on March 16. ✍️🎶 @robynckj@leahabe

ONLY A VISITOR released their first record as a quintet in 2015, debuting as a quirky and novel project that featured inter-woven three part harmonies over an instrumental section with twisty, rhythmic arrangements. They will be celebrating ten years of making music together at this special show.
THE ABRAMSON SINGERS are a Vancouver-based band with indie-rock, folk, and jazz roots led by singer, songwriter and composer Leah Abramson. MARCH 20: LOST DOG in partnership with BARKING SPHINX presents a Very Special FRIDAY evening of rare live performances from two long-running groups.
ONLY A VISITOR released their first record as a quintet in 2015, debuting as a quirky and novel project that featured inter-woven three part harmonies over an instrumental section with twisty, rhythmic arrangements. Over the years they've released four records, with the most recent being Decay (Mint Records, 2023.) While each member of the group has their own distinct musical projects (Immix, Streams, Future Star, Last Ark Out, Kevin Romain's Salience Network etc), Only A Visitor is a project that funnels all their experiences and sonic languages in tandem. Celebrating ten years of making music together, the group is reuniting on March 20th 2026 at the Hargrove.
THE ABRAMSON SINGERS are a Vancouver-based band with indie-rock, folk, and jazz roots led by singer, songwriter and composer Leah Abramson. With a history spanning over a decade, the Abramson Singers have garnered critical acclaim for their lush harmonies, introspective lyrics, and captivating live performances.
They toured Canada, the UK, and Europe extensively from 2008-2014 before Leah took a break from the band to focus on interdisciplinary projects, parenthood, and choral composing.
The Abramson Singers are back in 2026 with their third album, with long-time bandmates Tyson Naylor (keyboards/synth) and Dan Gaucher (drums) returning, and Jason Starnes (guitar/synth) and Mark Beaty (bass/cello) bringing new energy to the project. With a fresh chamber-synth sound, Abramson’s latest offering explores the paradoxes of life beyond the narrow auspices of youth culture.
When not leading The Abramson Singers, Leah can be found arranging choral music and leading rock/pop choir, The Kingsgate Chorus, or teaching a songwriting workshop near you.

Oxpital has our second show! How did a new band like us get such a great opening act? Ask our keyboard player! But seriously, there aren’t many bars like the Wise Lounge left in Vancouver. Come and see us and then play a round of darts. But don’t play darts while we’re playing because we don’t trust your aim! Also bring cash, cause the Wise doesn’t take card! There really aren’t a lot of bars like it!
