Muneyi’s music is a profound offering—creating space for healing, reflection, and an honest exploration of the human spirit. Rooted in Tshivenda storytelling, his work draws from childhood memories, folktales, and the wisdom of his elders, blending ancestral knowledge with contemporary folk expression.
Born in Tshilapfene, near Thohoyandou, Muneyi has emerged as one of South Africa’s most compelling voices. The recipient of the 2025 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music and the 2024 PanSALB Award for Songwriting, his acclaimed projects include Makhulu, For The Boys I Like, and There’s A Burning Sensation Where My Heart Used To Be—works that explore love, grief, identity, and self-forgiveness with extraordinary depth and tenderness.
His forthcoming project, Shumela Venda, reflects on identity and South African history through the Bantustan lens, featuring collaborations with artists such as Nduduzo Makhathini. Muneyi has also shared stages with Sho Madjozi, Msaki, and Zoë Modiga.
For AFRODIASPORA CONNECTION, Muneyi presents a deeply moving performance that speaks to memory, belonging, and the enduring power of song to connect us across generations.

5 Years of Makhulu
This was my first album. I was 25 when we recorded this. I had written the music from when I was 21 up to that moment. I was brave, maybe braver then than I am now.
People always say that your first album is the accumulation of your lived experience from birth to that exact moment when you choose to share. Any other work you share after that is influenced by how you’re perceived as a maker of things and how you pereive the world as a creator.
This album taught me a lot about myself. At some point I felt like I couldn’t be the real me because I was seen as this young boy who was devoted to his grandmother. There were so many other layers I wanted to share.
Happy 5th birthday to my first child. You made me this person. I’m so grateful to younger me for being brave. Thank you to the most amazing muse, my grandmother - you’re only human, but you’ve impacted me in such a solid way. Thank you for raising me and freeing me and always allowing me to be me.
I’m grateful to @scherzoprod - I owe you my life (and a visit to your studio soon). To my then housemate and producer and big brother @_taxda , to the entire band, to @simzkulla - people love Lufuno bro, thank you. To @bradcummingaudio - I am so grateful for you - thanks for those mixes.
Looking back I was so young and I can’t believe @zoemodiga said yes to being on this project. I am in awe of you always. To @ogudlumkhukhu and all my other collaborators, including @ndinannyi for the most iconic cover art.
Also @tumishonoto_ for holding my hand when I had to release this, you’re still the kindest most hands on person to deal with me. I appreciate you. @_mattrams for driving me to studio and doing overdubs when you don’t like being on the mic - argh
Fidel - the world will never know or understand. Everyday I miss you. We would have been so happy about this moment, I feel so robbed of your presence and existence. I’ll love you until I see you again. Thank you for being so supportive, and for loving me so fiercely.
And lastly, to the heavyweight champion - me! You’re a real one Moons 🫵🏽❤️

this is a gentle reminder that aura cannot be bought - you either have it or you don’t. May the days of my youth always be filled with bountiful expression. The days when my body tires, filled with reflection.
