#nokings way to show up, community! Chuffed to see so many people out and about, especially the elders. Praise to @courtwrites for bringing snacks and sharing them with little strangers ❤️🙏🦄🥰 democracy was looking hopeful today. #grateful
Minneapolis! So good to be among the green changing leaves and misty lakes of that outrageous city that held me for a decade and to be witness to the brilliant @robinwallkimmerer and @adalimonwriter - such generous, rigorous, demanding and imaginative women whose words we badly need right now. They remind us to tune into the always-available relationships with plants, and to take nothing for granted. Ada’s new book, Startlement, is a catalogue of astonishments rooted in the ordinary, incredible world. Grateful for Robin’s keynote calling us to meet the moment, which she called The Age of Remembering. We can do it, y’all. We can find our way toward each other, toward the plants, toward what they know about survival and cooperation and reciprocity. Massive gratitude to our consummate hosts @samleeanders and Ben and fam and their snuggly, furry housemate.
Really loved this book of poetry written by @mayaalhayyat and translated by @joudahfady . Published by @milkweed_books , “You can be the Last Leaf” is such a beautiful collection of poetry with phrases that stay with you like when she writes of dreaming “of a war / that’s got no war in it.” The author is Beirut-born and #Palestinian. The cover art is by @mspeaker - gorgeous. 🩷🧿
In case anyone was wondering whether authoritarianism was really happening here or not… our president is actively deferring to an authoritarian government over our voting practices. This is not how our country was designed to work. Getting rid of mail-in ballots disenfranchises anyone who can’t make it to the polls because of work or illness or travel or disability. This is simply unacceptable. Do not accept this.
Grateful for friends, hammocks, brave kids jumping into Lake Superior, happy kids burying themselves in the sand, ferries, fairies, mulberries, mushrooms, Minnesota.
Ending a week of some of the most mutually supportive and flourishing writing community I have ever had the honor to join. Grateful to director Alexander Weinstein for the opportunity to work with such talented, engaged, and generous students @mvicw !! 💕I think Martha’s Vineyard is part fairytale, part fog, part forest. 🥰 thanks to all who participated !

🐤 Publishing in October, THE BOOK OF KIN: ON ABSENCE, LOVE , AND BEING THERE is a remarkable debut by Jennifer Eli Bowen (@notyourjenji ) that explores the imperfect ways we care for one another, and how we seek repair when care fails.
📖 “THE BOOK OF KIN is an expansive experience, one that, I believe, will be appreciated for its searing and always-seeking approach to tackling large emotions, to wring the secondary colors out of the grander, primary feelings. This book is beautiful, brave, and inventive.”—Hanif Abdurraquib
