I made an EP called āAvoid These Songsā because letās face it, a 30-something year oldās first stab at making experimental rock probably doesnāt even warrant a cursory listen on Spotify.
Iāve been surrounded by incredible musicians my entire life but I never felt the call to put out my own stuff. Actually, thatās a lie. Teenage Tim totally wanted to sing and perform originals but wasnāt brave enough to write bad stuff in order to get good so he opted for playing covers instead. Somewhere in rural Belgium in 2009ish my ābandā and I performed an undoubtedly subpar set of White Stipes, Muse and Green Day songs at a classmateās birthday š
But I digress. In 2023, I had the experience of living a life long dream which was followed by a peculiar āNow what?ā. The answer: life just kinda goes on. What else ya got, kid?
For those who have chosen to pursue an artistic career, it can be challenging to keep your creative garden well tended. You have to leave room for unfiltered expression and pure diary entry BUT there is also (by necessity) a voice in your head that evaluates which plant from said garden needs fertilizer so it can grow into a showpiece that pays your rent⦠Iām straining the garden metaphor but you get the idea.
My already frazzled mind frequently gets overwhelmed by that voice. And in a particularly gnarly state of paralysis, writing these songs became both empowering and therapeutic. I hadnāt given myself an identity as a musician. I was (am) an amateur so I had nothing to prove. This was pure play. True exploration. It was learning that gave voice to new parts of myself. Total freedom.
If any of this resonates, the nugget of wisdom I have taken from the experience that Iād love to lay down for the record is that there is real value in allowing yourself additional artistic outlets. You might just be surprised by what you find.
Thereās more to say but Iām gonna leave this here for now. Thanks for reading my ramble if you are. I wish you well, keep creating ā¤ļø rock on š¤

Prancing around DTLA in a suit with @bekor_ last year for our annual portrait tradition ā¤ļø Iāve officially lived in this city for over a decade which is a longer period of time than Iāve lived anywhere else (uninterrupted)
šø Another year, another portrait by @bekor_ . This is a tradition that precedes our relationship years ā¤ļø. Detective vibes for 2024 šµļø More to come from this batch
If youāre lucky enough to consider @bekor_ a friend, you have someone who truly sees you. Thatās what it was like for a decade before our āit was my best friend the whole timeā love story started over three years ago. To have a true foundation and context prior to falling in love⦠yeah I get it now. Highly recommend. No notes. ā¤ļø
So much of filmmaking is creative problem solving. Director Tim Hautekiet shares one of the many struggles that arose while shooting āMe, Myself & The Voidā.
