Against the sprawl of #Bangkok’s skyline, #RajoLaurel showcased his Lahí couture collection on the world stage. For the designer, presenting this particularly personal collection in this city carried symbolic weight, seeing the “Land of Smiles” as “a sister nation,” with hopes the collection will spark a wonderful dialogue for the future. The goal was to “link these visual clues that connect us as a people, as a region, and as a race.” Filipino fashion is never a solitary pursuit, Laurel emphasizes. “We come [to Thailand] not alone, we come as a community. “I love that word ‘inheritance’ primarily because, as a Filipino, I’m a product of everything that has been put in me,” says @RajoLaurel of his Lahí couture collection, created in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry’s Malikhaing Pinoy program. Presented on the rooftop of the Dusit Thani in #Bangkok, the collection is a mélange of archival designs and new works, drawing inspiration and materials from across the archipelago. Tawi-Tawi and Sulu weaves, Benguet-crafted skirts, Fernando Amorsolo’s muses, Cordilleran dress, and the Filipiniana are reimagined and adorned with capiz, pearls, raffia, and abaca. For the Homecoming Issue of Vogue Philippines, we find home in places stretching from Laguna to Palawan to Australia and beyond. For our cover story, in Isabela de Basilan, stories of co-existence leave desire lines in the land. On this month's cover, model #Suganya sits along a rocky shoreline in the southern island province of #Basilan, wearing a piece by Mindanao-born designer #JaggyGlarino inspired by the corrugated metal sheets that served as roofs in the villages in his province. Now on its 18th edition, Jakarta Fashion Week welcomed guests to a series of presentations by Indonesian and Southeast Asian designers. Once upon a time, among the vast pastures of Pangasinan, @BellaPoarch learned how to sing. Her neighbors frequently had their radio on blast, blaring everything from Filipino love songs to global pop hits. Such were the medleys that soundtracked a routine of household chores, of cutting grass or watering mahogany and mango trees. “The very first song I learned was ‘Reflection’ from the movie Mulan,” she reveals. “It was a very beautiful memory that I’ll just never forget, because it was the moment that I’m like, ‘I want to be a singer one day.’” What followed were concrete steps in pursuit of that dream: childhood singing competitions, early SoundCloud covers, her first TikTok upload, her first single, accompanied by an award-winning music video, and then her first EP 'Dolls,' released in 2022. Now, she's working on her first full-length album, which she describes as “a reflection of myself and my life.” Ahead of its release later this year, she returns to her home province for the first time in 14 years, talking to Vogue Philippines about mangoes, jam sessions during her time in the military, and a lifetime of music.
