A huge congratulations to all the performers, facilitators, and participants who made Dances of Diaspora! so special.
From vibrant folk dances to the collective spirit of the ‘Unity Dance’, the event was an energetic expression of culture, connection, and shared joy.
It was truly inspiring to see communities come together, celebrating heritage, creativity, and the unifying power of dance.

We’re proud to announce we will be hosting a new participation tent this year at Africa Oye featuring creative practices including craft, arts, storytelling, singing, holistic practices from the African Diaspora!
Our curators Afro Dance Academy have named it ‘Kukina’, from the Kimbundu language of Angola.
Dorivalda says: ““Kukina”, for us, it’s movement and more, it’s connection. It’s the way stories are shared without words, the way generations meet in rhythm, the way strangers become family.
We named our tent “Kukina” because everyone belongs here. No matter where you come from, how you move, or who you are — you’re invited to step in, join the circle, and be part of something bigger.
This is a space for learning and togetherness. A space where culture lives, breathes, and welcomes all.
Come show your art and get creative with us.” If you are an artist and would like to come and share your practice at the festival applications are still open until Monday 11th May! See link in bio 🔗

Movema have made a fun little show for families about the Celtic festival of Bealtine (‘Byal-tine-uh’. If you were wondering 😆) We were invited by the wonderful Liverpool Irish Centre to help them celebrate this annual quarter year festival with their communities. We worked really hard to pull something together especially for this event because we are passionate about connecting people with Dance and cultural traditions that are rooted in the essence of what it means to be human, to connect with each other to connect with the landing nature and to connect with our own arts and creativity. It’s going to be a lot of fun fun, a little bit silly and a little bit beautiful. Massive thanks to the generosity of Edwina Guckian for allowing us to use some of her beautiful writing as part of the script and thank you to Liverpool Irish Centre for this little seed of a commission to bring this fire to life 🔥 🦅 🌷 @edwinaguckian@liverpoolirishcentre@livirishfest@culture_liverpool@squashliverpool
We had our first dance class for women with Movema this week 🥰
Our ladies had the best time moving their bodies, connecting with each other and having fun! 💃🏽🕺 🪩
