A sampling of two powder rooms in our Jennie Lane Cohousing project. Each house celebrates variations on a color theme, and @houseofhackney ‘s Hollyhock wallpaper was perfect for that - a rich and playful pattern that comes in a variety of joyous colors. This renovation project honors the home’s original timber framing, and brings it forward as the room’s defining feature. Clerestory windows draw the eye upward, and a fresh repaint ensures the structure reads clean and uninterrupted. A light touch, so the structure can speak for itself. The Lavender Wing of the Jennie Lane co-housing development quickly became one of our favorites of all of the wings. Purple often gets a bad rap — but paired with the right tones, both muted and bold, it holds its own beautifully. We anchored the space with a softened purple @roomandboard sofa, then layered in a custom quilt wall hanging by the incredibly talented @mdotcallahan . Bright accent pillows, cognac leather side chairs, and a bold striped rug bring it all together — flowing effortlessly into the adjacent PURPLE tiled kitchen (coming up next! 👀) Interior Design & Furnishings: @mother__studio Architecture & Interior Design: @maryannthompsonarchitects Build: Murphy and Moran Builders Landscape Architecture: @mvva.inc Photography: @aliharper ✨ Photo assist: @aarion_joseph

Our vision for the cohousing living space was to balance coziness with expansiveness. We followed @maryannthompsonarchitects ’ lead to make it a versatile anchor for the community— it’s equally appropriate for an intimate conversation with friends, piling friends together for a late night movie and popcorn hang, or as a quiet retreat just steps away from the party. We prioritized comfort and durability, sticking to a simple palette of solid woods and performance fabrics. It lands as a friendly environment that feels pulled together, yet never too precious to actually live in. Our newest project, Jennie Lane, is a subsidized farm worker cohousing community on Martha’s Vineyard. In close collaboration with @maryannthompsonarchitects we set out to create spaces that feel grounded, beautiful, and enduring— places that support daily life for the farm workers who inhabit them. Our design approach began with the land itself. Working with the landscape plan envisioned by @mvva.inc each of the concepts for the five connected homes and the shared communal space draws inspiration from the colors of nearby native blossoms in spring. The result is a palette that feels both vibrant and deeply rooted in place. We’re starting here with the heart of the community: the communal kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Designed to comfortably host up to 24 people, the kitchen is generous and hardworking, featuring two ranges, two dishwashers, multiple refrigerators, and ample space to cook, gather, linger over coffee, or share a quiet meal. I can’t imagine a world where we forget how to make. Using our hands connects us to history, to our bodies, to our communities, and to each other. This is what it does for us, does it do that for you? Between the two of us, this hand appliqued fabric piece for @uchirestaurants ‘ new Charlotte location has taken us 24 hours - time spent with busy hands, our children helping by pulling threads and keeping us company, hours of Laura and I cutting and arranging and stitching and talking and negotiating color and form and our friendship. Our craft roots run deep (sometimes deep into dark parts of the 90’s but we are integrating those shadows the best we can 😂). We’re grateful for a profession that helps us connect to other makers and artists, and keeps us in our respective and collective art practices.

Last Saturday, after a beautiful holiday with friends, we hopped in the car and drove an hour deeper into the mountains to Penland School of Craft to catch the last day of PERFECTION: a question of repair, curated by Penland gallery curator Kathryn Gremley and guest curator Celia Pym. Our timing was ideal — our good friend and featured artist in the show, Rachel Meginnes, lives nearby and was able to meet with us to catch up and walk us through the show. The show struck me in many ways, particularly the simple celebration of the beauty of mending and imperfection—an embrace of choosing to move slowly, deliberately, and with interest. In Jessamyn Hatcher’s essay on the exhibition, SOMETHING CAN BE DONE HERE, she quotes Celia Pym — “I don’t think you can mend unless you have the tools to mend. I don’t literally mean a needle and scissors. The tools are an encounter, or an experience, or an understanding, a knowledge.” She says, “You can’t talk about mending without talking about damage. My own experience with mending is that finding the particular types of damage that I am attracted to is half the work. Noticing what the damage is [and saying] ‘I can do something with that. Yeah, something can be done here.’” Something can be done here. Inside each of us, here in Western North Carolina as we recover from Hurricane Helene, right there in the place where you live, and when you find a connection. We are all mending in our own way. Though the show closed last weekend, you can still learn about the artists and read the exhibition essay by visiting @penlandschool ‘s site.
