I’m so pumped to finally get this little piece out in the world. Making it with some good buds and new collaborators
@adamblasberg and
@marshalchupa , and seeing the limitless talent and soul of
@duartejuan , was worth every penny of the teeny tiny self-funded budget. And it wouldn’t have happened without a handful of favours from some good industry friends too
@lornelapham @cameronsparling @davidtomiakcolour @mdrake08 .
But it wasn’t a perfect project.
Like any passion project, it had its standard dose of elation, disappointment, exhaustion, gratitude, fear, uncertainty, pride. Sitting in the directing and editing chair for this one, and maybe by default feeling a little more attached to the project throughout the creation process, the final stage of releasing the finishing product – trying to get it out there, to get noticed – hit a little harder.
A few back-to-back failed attempts to get it picked up by the usual handful of industry-specific pages/accounts wasn’t anything new – rejection is reportedly what makes us better as artists and creators – but it got me doing some thinking about what that rejection and conversely affirmation, does for me, for all of us. Made me think more deeply about the accounts and networks and companies I care about and aspire to be recognized by, and how their stamps of approval or emails of rejection make me either super pumped or completely deflated, and how that razor’s edge emotional response to temporary, fleeting recognition from a very specific group of people is sort of unhealthy, at least for me. Unhealthy for my creativity and my passion for work, in the very least. And how ultimately, I realize that resolving to being more open and proud of what I create, to send it out in the world with a little more love, releases those super high-tension lines that keep me strapped down behind the façade of trying to be perfect. So, I hope you enjoy this beautiful little piece. We loved making it.
