I’m honored that “Colorful Colorado Nails” is one of 31 shorts chosen to be part of this year’s International Selection at @european.media.art.festival in Osnabrück, Germany and will receive an EMAF Award along with a monetary prize! This Saturday, April 26th at 11am, “Colorful Colorado Nails” will have its European premiere in the “A Deflected Signal” program. ✨🏔🌀💅🌀💅🌀🏔✨ This is my fifth time screening at EMAF, which has a very special place in my heart as it was the first festival I ever participated in way back in 2002, while still an undergraduate BFA student at @alfreduniversity . ✨💖✨ Here are some throwback pics from when I attended the festival in 2002 & 2009: 1. ⚡️📺⚡️My video in collaboration with James Connolly @jxconno , “Eight-Minute Romp Through SAIC’s Sandin Image Processor” is included in the group exhibition, Flicker & Roll at Resonant Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan through April 2nd! ⚡️📺⚡️ This exhibition showcases a multi-generational approach to exploring analog video as a creative medium, tracing its origins to the late 1960s and early 1970s to present. Artists approaching this then-new technology quickly discovered the limits of its possibilities and issues of access outside commercial television studios. This led to the development of artist-built tools that laid the groundwork for today’s open-source ethos, a radical hacking of the black box that opened new ways of seeing and sparked a continual fascination with dismantling and reimagining technological systems, using error itself as a creative medium. While analog has been widely replaced by digital technologies, a dedicated community of working artists continues to choose this medium, cultivating an almost cult-like following. The language of analog continues to evolve as artists intertwine new processes, 3D animation and creative coding, into their workflows, challenging notions of technological obsolescence. Their work demonstrates that new ground can still be found in something “old,” creating new hybrid forms by mixing contemporary technologies with analog processes. After many months of reconfiguring the @idmnyu Video Lab, it is finally back up and running! ⚡️📺⚡️ We have two new equipment racks in which we integrated gear from a generous donation by Greg Zifcak, a MiniDV Deck, VHS & DVD decks, two Bittree video patchbays, a big rack distribution amplifier, Tektronix 1720 vectorscope, 1730D waveform monitor, four 8” Sony Trinitron PVM preview monitors donated by @neumann58 , a TV wall with nine 13” Sony Trinitron monitors donated by @kelly_heaton , two iMacs, two flat screen TVs, three camcorders, lights, a green screen, and of course, a Panasonic WJ-MX50A video mixer donated to @rlukedubois by Benton Bainbridge @feedmediaart . This is my fifth time screening at CUFF and I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of the longest running underground film festival in the world once again! 💫 On Saturday, September 20th at 5:30pm, Colorful Colorado Nails will have its Colorado premiere at Denver Digerati Experimental Media Festival @denverdigerati in the Threaded Gestures program! More video stills from “Eight-Minute Romp Through SAIC’s Sandin Image Processor”, my new video in collaboration with @jxconno . ⚡️🎛✝️🤠🤠✝️🎛⚡️ For this piece, I made two hand-knit recreations of the hat Chicago artist and toolmaker Dan Sandin wore in his classic 1973 video, “Five-minute Romp through the IP.” For those who are curious, both hats were made with Patons brand Shetland Chunky yarn (75% acrylic and 25% wool) using the Bubble Beanie Hat pattern by @studioknit . The hats’ texture was created with what’s called a “bobble stitch.” The black and silver bands are made of felt, silver studs, and hot glue, then sewn to the hats, which are finally stuffed with polyfiber filling to give them their shape. ✨🧶🧶✨ Synopis: An homage to Chicago artist and toolmaker Dan Sandin’s 1973 video, “Five-minute Romp through the IP”, in which Sandin demos the Image Processor (IP), a modular analog video synthesizer he built the same year, and encouraged artists to copy in his “Distribution Religion” manifesto. In this video, artists James Connolly and Monica Panzarino perform with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s IP, a historic tool, as it was one of the first image processors built by Sandin. The artists wear recreations of the unique hat Sandin wore in his 1973 video, which are hand-knit by Panzarino.
