reminiscent of retinae… Finally got film shots back from @klarspective__ (slide 4) so it’s high time I show updates! This flat-felted piece was made collaboratively during a workshop I held during First Friday at @the.bike.library Much love to those who had never tried wet felting but were eager to get down and dirty!

THIS FIRST FRIDAY, April 3rd: I will be hosting my first FREE wet felting workshop at @the.bike.library From 7-8pm you can participate by RSVPing at the link in bio! (https://forms.gle/nXnETLJBJy9n5GYt9) Wet felting is a traditional craft of fusing wool roving into a solid piece of fabric by agitating it with hot water and soap. This versatile process has been used to create various items like hats, scarves, and mittens. Learn the basics of how fibers can be transformed into art and contribute to a community piece! I’ll be doing an artist pop-up featuring some of my fiber works and handmade hats for sale, alongside many other local artists! Find all of this for ONE NIGHT ONLY at this hidden gem in Boylan Heights!

Earlier this month, I was glad to be featured in @voyageraleigh ‘s Inspiring Stories! I’ve been recommended twice and figured I’d finally complete this and share. If you’re wondering a bit about who I am, this is a smooth introduction. Still lost? Talk to me! Read the full article linked IN BIO✨

In August, I completed my first mural project, assisting @ar_artistry for the @growyourworldnc building in Carrboro! Very appreciative for Shady for calling me in for this and TJ (@lovingyouquietly ) for extra support. I was also assisting throughout the site, as 4 artists did a mural for each wall of this building. Loved helping @smalldarkandbright and Shady with some prep work in between my own!

💡RECAP: In May I was also asked by @lettycyousmile to host an intimate workshop as one of the events during the exhibition she curated at @durhamartguild : “It Ain’t All Black and White”, featuring a series B&W photos by local Black photographers. 🔮My talk “Recognition Beyond Sight” was recorded and will be available on my site soon. After marinating, I came up with the concept as it relates to the ability to recognize community and those of shared ancestry by factors that extend beyond choice. How are we able to discern so well who and where we feel at home with and recognize their experiences as our own, just as we recognize the scenes w/n the exhibition as canonically Black, though they lack color? 🎞️Black and white film photos we took of each other during the event will also be shared once developed

💫 TLDR: This begins my series of updates to you as “proof” of my practice. For you, the general public, are not obligated to peruse my portfolio (or are in close proximity) and I am not obligated to present my every activity. So this begins an incremental update to inform you of all the activities through which my passions intersect. This past May, I attended my first artist retreat/residency. @schoolofthealternative is a cross between the two, as well as a center for alternative art/life/political education located on the historic Black Mountain College campus outside of Asheville. I spent a week amongst creators and cultural workers from the around the country (+ Canada) to take classes at our own pace, share labor, knowledge, and music! It was truly unconventional and difficult to describe within tbe confines of western academia. This self-prompted pace begets self-determination and autonomy—two things which are often denied in a typical school setting. I didn’t know what to do with it: “You mean to tell me class is optional and I get to rest, but I also want to learn everything, but I’m also called for kitchen duty while I’m also called to be outdoors?” Bodily rage. Solution—decision making, centered around my present needs. Self advocacy. I’m not used to that, but I needed it.

I realized recently that the “all-encompassing artist” label was something only afforded to me by those who aren’t—the outgroup. Many of the ppl I’ve begun to connect with recently have a vague understanding of my artistic practices, and no knowledge of my foundation to my surprise. With a lifetime study of 2D mixed media and fashion design, I find it odd that I’ve been largely dissociated from that and associated more with a recent pursuit: DJing and community engagement. The point is that they are all tied. I find myself at the intersection of art, design, and community engagement. So while I’ll try not to overcompensate with posts of my fine art, I will give you insight into ALL that I do, especially the discipline that I hold most dear. Prepare to see my practices—all of them. “Mutha” (2022) acrylic on masonite
