Emptying the archives before the clock strikes.
This year’s travels brought me to cousins in Arnhem I didn’t know, like @johnhayesmf of Mother’s Finest. Amsterdam returned me to a distant friend, and then guided me into a store where in striking up convo, I playfully became someone’s “new deity” (@doitlikedua ) and had the honor to pass off some @sunguhsmokes ofc.

Impulsive travel. Stop 1/3
Action is a teacher and I am blessed to take it on. Many of these trips are teaching me to return more grounded and intentional, and ultimately to sit my ass down. We’re getting there.
(my face for algo)
Hey, posting this for a period of time to boost more!
My coworker is a single mom of 3 going through a transitional period in life. She suffered a house fire some months ago and has incurred incredible financial and emotional debt with no outside assistance.
Right now, she’s staying in a hotel but everyday is a stretch and any assistance to prolong her stay until she can find permanent (or transitional) housing would be so appreciated!
I’ll also be divvying up some money I just got back between mutual aid calls I come across. Match?
💫 TLDR: This begins my series of updates to you as “proof” of my practice. For you, the general public, are not obligated to peruse my portfolio (or are in close proximity) and I am not obligated to present my every activity. So this begins an incremental update to inform you of all the activities through which my passions intersect.
This past May, I attended my first artist retreat/residency. @schoolofthealternative is a cross between the two, as well as a center for alternative art/life/political education located on the historic Black Mountain College campus outside of Asheville. I spent a week amongst creators and cultural workers from the around the country (+ Canada) to take classes at our own pace, share labor, knowledge, and music! It was truly unconventional and difficult to describe within tbe confines of western academia.
This self-prompted pace begets self-determination and autonomy—two things which are often denied in a typical school setting. I didn’t know what to do with it: “You mean to tell me class is optional and I get to rest, but I also want to learn everything, but I’m also called for kitchen duty while I’m also called to be outdoors?” Bodily rage. Solution—decision making, centered around my present needs. Self advocacy. I’m not used to that, but I needed it.
When life is a movie pictures can’t do it justice.
A reminder - though we’ve got a long way to go - we’ve come a long way to experience joy in this space together.
Happy Solar Return to @tenderwaterlybeing , Blessings and luck in SF. To @sunguhsmokes fam and all the extended beautiful energies surrounding, y’all make me excited for the future. 🌏 🦋🌊🎵🌙
Out of the entire week, the only day I was scheduled to work was today—Juneteenth! Naturally, I called out. I spent the day giving time to my practices—progress on a months-long painting and jamming w friends.
To allegiance to your practices and all forms of liberation: Here’s some snippets from my set at @doubledutchnc this past weekend. Lovely, energetic, and Black. Recording to be posted soon…💕
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Monaveee monaveeeee
“Monaveee is a multidisciplinary artist whose work falls at the intersection of fine art, design, and community engagement. Her explorations of music—DJing, performance, and event production—are one of several avenues to bringing about collective wellbeing and nurturing. Her sound selections are informed by the rhythm of the Black experience—alternative R&B, afro house and other diasporic finds. “
Don’t miss the vibrant and eclectic sounds of Monaveee at our Double Feature Afterparty at @neptunes.parlour 8pm-2am🙌🏾

Join us in the Truist Gallery next Wednesday, May 29th from 7PM-8:30PM, for “Recognition Beyond Sight”, a workshop guided by Mona Abraham (@monaveeeee )—a multidisciplinary artist and community advocate—through identifying the nuanced experiences of their global diasporic community.
To simply live the Black experience is one phenomenon, while carefully making oneself aware of all its aspects is another. In this intimate setting, guests are invited to re-acquaint themselves within the gallery space to sit amongst each other and engage in discourse. A series of prompts will be given to ask participants to recall elements of their life and select moments in and out of the photographs to align them with.
This will be an exploration of building familiarity with mutual experiences that already exist within the individual–a gateway to finding solace in the collective and the self. Emphasis will be placed on the value of introspection to be had on a daily basis. To practice the “liberation of introspection” is not extraneous, but rather essential in emotional rest from the demands of life.
