For 78 years, the Durham Art Guild has supported artists by providing free space to learn, connect, exhibit, and sell their work. As Durham continues to grow and change, sustaining that commitment has never been more important, or more challenging.
To honor our legacy and invest in the future, we invite you to join The 78 , a community of monthly donors dedicated to keeping Durham’s creative spirit alive. With a goal of one sustainer for every year of our impact, members of The 78 play a vital role in ensuring artists always have access to space and support they need.

ART SWAP WAS AMAZING!!
We met so many new members, artists, and those who dabble in creativity. Thank you to everybody who brought work, talked about it, and swapped it for another to continue spreading the joy that is art making ❤️
Super special thanks to Mar and Ment Beverage Co., who generously give us the space for creators to connect with one another.
Stay tuned for dates on the next art swap, and always check our Events page for more community art events (link in bio)!

WATCH UNTIL THE END, YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED!
This year has been rough, and we need our community’s help to support our artists and keep our culture alive through the arts.
Consider joining The 78 and making a monthly contribution to the Durham Art Guild, and help us continue the legacy of creativity, freedom of expression, and supporting the artists who make our voices heard.
More information can be found at the link in our bio.
If you cannot make a contribution because, well, things are obviously hard right now, you can help by sharing this post and interacting with it. Visiting our galleries, buy art online, and tell your friends about our story.
“What’s Your Art Hustle?” Is TONIGHT at the DAG Truist Gallery from 6pm - 7pm. Join other DAG artists and talk about what’s going on, what you’re working on and what isn’t working. We’re a group of artists looking for connection and providing support. See you there?
The Guild presents “Branching Rooted” featuring works by Cindy Morefield located at the DAG Golden Belt Gallery until May 23rd, 2026.
EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
In my recent practice I build a large wall collage, a “texture matrix,” from paper, tape, and other recycled materials, and then make multiple rubbings from it. All the pieces in this exhibit began as rubbings from Texture Matrix 5, a portion of which is included in the exhibit. Though each work is unique, the common underlying matrix reveals itself in the root/branch motif referenced by the show’s title.
In the Above Yet Beneath series, the matrix-based rubbings are made with water-soluble crayon and wax crayon, accentuated with watercolor and colored pencil. I then cut shapes out of the paper. Some matrix-based rubbings have two layers so that a second rubbing, made with wax pastel on Yupo, is visible through cutouts in the top sheet. Others are a single sheet where the cutouts reveal light reflected from the wall on which they are hung.
The Radicle View pieces are mixed media rubbings on paper, mounted on panel. “Radicle”is a term for the part of a plant embryo that develops into the primary root, or a rootlike subdivision of a nerve or vein. Radical View alludes to the root/branch and window pane motifs that characterize the series. Rubbings obviously explore surface texture, but they also show what’s beneath the surface. I am intrigued by the play between what is hidden and revealed, and how that play makes space for mystery.
Installed and on view at the North Carolina Medical Board in Raleigh!
Grateful to be part of the Art@Work program through the Durham Art Guild—huge thanks to Dara (again!) for making the installation process so smooth and easy.
Really pleased with how the pieces came together in the space, and even more thankful that the work will be seen by a whole new audience over the next six months.
Thank you as well to @ncmedboard for providing such a beautiful space to showcase local artists.
ART SWAP IS BACK! MAY 7 FROM 6-8PM
