Yo! This Modbap documentary has been writing itself for years now. We’ve been slowly but surely putting in work and grabbing interviews as time permits and when schedules allow. We have many more to go but for now here is a taste of what’s to come… eventually. Stay tuned.
What is Modbap?
Modbap music and lo-fi hip hop music share some similarities, but there are also some key differences between the two genres.
Modbap music is a subgenre of hip hop that incorporates elements of modular synthesis, jazz, and funk. It typically features complex and intricate rhythms, with a focus on polyrhythms and syncopation. Modbap music also emphasizes improvisation and experimentation, with a heavy reliance on live performance and analog instruments.
On the other hand, lo-fi hip hop music is characterized by its use of low-fidelity recordings, with elements like vinyl crackle, tape hiss, and sample distortion often intentionally left in the mix. Lo-fi hip hop music typically features slow and relaxed tempos, with a focus on creating a mellow and nostalgic atmosphere. It often incorporates samples from jazz, soul, and R&B music, as well as elements of ambient and electronic music.
While both Modbap and lo-fi hip hop music share an emphasis on groove and rhythm, Modbap tends to be more complex and
experimental, while lo-fi hip hop is more laidback and nostalgic. Additionally, while lo-fi hip hop often relies on digital production techniques and software-based instruments, Modbap places a greater emphasis on analog synthesis and live performance.

This concept mirrors the way the filter delineates different frequencies and aural elements, generating a defined contrast that shapes the overall sound.

Live beat set vibes with the Modbap PER4MER in the mix. Nothing like being able to grab effects in real time, flip them into the groove, tap the lit arcade buttons, bend the sound, and build your own world on the fly. This is why PER4MER stays in my setup.
Running the Akai Force through the Eurorack and letting the Modbap PER4MER take it to another level. PER4MER’s Wax color mode adds vinyl crackle and warped record vibes, the compressor glues the whole beat together, and I’ve got ducking keyed to the music itself. On top of that, I’m riding the arcade buttons heavy on the glitch effect, tweaking pitch and size in real time. The obvious part is me pressing buttons, but the not-so-obvious part is how PER4MER is elevating the whole sound with compression and that dusty vinyl feel.
