“The Performing Art of Therapy: Acting Insights and Techniques for Clinicians” will be in print next month. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about the original cover art by the magnificent Erin Lombardi! NYC folks, save the date of Thursday March 7th, @ 7pm, for my launch party at @housingworksbks in SoHo. The $30 ticket is the cost of the book at a 25% discount (thanks to my publisher, Routledge!) and includes a signed copy as well as a variety of adult drinks, food and a short panel discussion with special guests. AND a percentage of the proceeds will benefit Housing Works (they provide a variety of services to address the intersection between HIV/ AIDS and homelessness, including therapy). Here’s the link to get tix: https://bit.ly/2TEmeI3 Please join me! Especially therapist friends, actor friends, and anyone who’d like to sip some bubbles with me. 😄🥂. This project has been a rewarding labor of love over the past three years...well, actually, over the past twenty five years, as it integrates everything I've devoted my life to throughout that period of time. I hope this book will inspire clinicians to work with as much empathy, aliveness, creativity and self-care as possible; encourage actors to consider a wide variety of vocations to share their highly applicable and versatile skills; and embolden everyone to think of therapy as a fun opportunity to discover the great many versions of self you can possibly be. There are so many collaborators to thank and I plan to do that, publicly, in the weeks ahead. So look out and stay tuned.❤️🛋️🎭📘🙏 #theperformingartoftherapy #therapy #psychotherapy #acting #housingworksbookstore #routledge #booklaunch #nyc #beyourselves

Passing the virtual mic to Mark @moctherapy and Justin @thisjustinyall as they share one of the most meaningful moments of their lives—the moment their son was born. To be in the delivery room is to witness life arriving in its most raw, powerful form. And it starts a pattern of partnership. This is why Fair Play matters. Because care, emotional labor, planning, and showing up for life’s biggest moments should never belong to just one person. Family is built in the everyday acts of partnership.

When people ask me what “kind” of therapist I am or how I practice I refer them to this clip of @violadavis winning her Oscar. When I teach workshops for therapists—on using themselves effectively in session—I encourage them to watch this clip endlessly. And to enter their offices each day with this intention and spirit. (No matter if they practice CBT, DBT, EFT, LMNOP, QRS, IFS, EMDR, or Psychoanalysis) Like acting, psychotherapy is the art of inviting aliveness—the art of inviting voices, stories, and lives that have largely remained unsung. Link in bio for upcoming workshops for therapists. Next webinar on nonverbal communication in the therapy room on 5/1 and 5/8 with @nscienceglobal #psychotherapy #therapy #theperformingartoftheraoy #ViolaDavis #CelebrationOfLife

Presumed Intimate That’s what I call the mysterious thriller we all find ourselves in when our family, chosen family, friends, partners, or community members insist that we’re Close. Period. No questions asked. Or else… But true intimacy can’t be presumed. It must be earned. And connection can never be based on fear. #therapy #theperformingartoftheraoy #presumedintimate #intimacy #connection

Curiosity vs. Certainty One invites connection. The other shuts connection down. Practice curiosity in every exchange. Both with your text and your subtext. #therapy #theperformingartoftheraoy #curiosity #relationships

We all know we need boundaries but… What do we do about the loneliness that comes with setting a boundary? How do we walk through that lonely feeling of differentiating from a person or a group in order to self preserve? First, we must remember that a boundary is a beginning, not an ending. And by setting boundaries, we invite more recognition and belonging than could ever be possible if we simply tried to fit in. Remember: Boundaries ultimately make us less alone, not more alone #therapy #theperformingartoftheraoy #boundaries #relationships

The only thing I really know about basketball… is that it’s gonna dominate the rest of my life. He LOVED his first @brooklynnets game! Obviously. (swipe left). Though he did note: “Dad, why aren’t there any women on the team?” That’s my boy. #Brookkyn #BrookkynNets #Basketball #Basketballdads 🏀 🧡

Most of us think we’re communicating clearly.
But people don’t just respond to our words—our text.
They respond to our implicit intention—subtext. Our intentions either to Connect or to Protect are always felt by the other person. Always. Which one are you leading with? #therapy #theperformingartoftheraoy #connection #protection #subtext
