“The New Thing” invites performers to play and speak personally to contemporary forms of improvised musics, encompassing what many people refer to as the “avant-garde,” “free” music or “experimental” music. By bringing these musical forms to the forefront, the series aims to encourage a more robust and wide-reaching understanding of what “jazz” is and can be.

Sharing these stories a couple weeks ago on the day my Mom retired from 50+ years as a church organist, director (and other full time jobs) was well received and the message felt nice to share while adding some positivity to this landscape. I grew up playing with her there, and though the music and settings I pursued may be different in ways, over time I’ve come to admire more and more her service as a musician, and the opportunity she had for Self and Selfless fulfillment every week.
