Hocketing is a musical technique where a single melody or rhythm is split between multiple voices or instruments to create an interlocking (or, "hiccuping") effect. Composer and artist Meara O'Reilly's interest in hockets began with a fascination with auditory perception. Her "Hockets for Two Voices" album, with no production and never more than two notes at a time, is an experiment in performance that invites listeners to investigate the endless potential of individual perception. On March 5, the Meara O’Reilly Vocal Ensemble performs new works @2220arts at a concert staged by @upend.la At this special hometown show, LA-based vocalists Mingjia Chen, Linnea Sablosky, Jodie Landau, and Eliza Bagg bring to our ears two new pieces for four voices by this inventive composer, whose music plays with perceptual and unique compositional techniques to explore new modes of vocal expression. The program will also feature Mingjia Chen and Linnea Sablosky performing Hockets for Two Voices—O’Reilly’s touchstone work from 2019—as well as another set of hockets, originally written for two flutes and newly adapted for this vocal duo. Mingjia Chen and Linnea Sablosky’s Hockets for Two Voices tour with @tartarelena starts tonight @publicrecordsnyc in Brooklyn!! Unfortunately tonight’s show is already sold out, but I’ll post here if I hear about any last minute tickets getting released. Also, surprise! We made tshirts and screen printed limited edition posters! They feature black and white excerpts of the graphic scores I made for each hocket on the album, demonstrating how each part intertwines to make a new pattern together. Mingjia and Linnea will be selling these, as well as copies of the vinyl, on every stop of the tour. Touring is an incredible labor of love these days, please support their trip by picking up some merch at a show!

When I was 23 I was briefly in an experimental psychedelic rock band called Grass. The band only made one album, and we toured just once for a handful of shows before dissolving. The album was never released…until now! A few years ago, @greg_weeks_music_official and band co-founder @kwkbarker dusted off the three inch vintage reel-to-reel tapes the album was recorded on and had them rebaked—the iron oxides were literally starting to disintegrate. What remained was a document of a very specific moment in time. At the time of recording we were heavily influenced by music that was decades older; all these years later the record feels like an echo of an echo. I wrote a song that’s on the album, called Redwing. I sang and played guitar and rhodes, as well as an instrument I had invented at the time, made out of suspended and amplified silverware. When Greg (from the band Espers) asked me to join, all he had to say was “two drummers, twin electric leads” and I was in. The band was comprised of members of the bands Espers, Currituck Co., Feathers, Brightblack Morning Light, and The Valerie Project (a band solely devoted to live soundtracking the 1970 cult classic Czech film ‘Valerie and Her Week of Wonders’). The self titled album is out today on the @spiritualpajamas label. Hocketing in music is the practice of splitting a melody across multiple parts. It dates back to the Middle Ages in Western music, but can also be found in music from all over the world. This exploration of the form by composer Meara O’Reilly (@mearao ) was originally written for two voices, but here we are using 12! It introduced me to the technique of hocketing, and remains one of my favorite releases of the past decade. Go buy it on bandcamp this very instant. Here, we explore all of the sonic nooks and crannies between the notes of the first two chord groupings in the third song on the record. I could do this for hours.
