Our first print issue has been nominated for two James Beard awards! Roads & Kingdoms, Issue 1: Pleasure-Seeking in a Deranged World was nominated for overall coverage, and “Caracas Cocuy Crawl,” @tononrafa ’s feature on Venezuela’s national firewater, was nominated in the beverage category. This magazine marks our return to publishing after a long pause following the death of our partner Anthony Bourdain, so it’s particularly meaningful to be recognized in this way, at this moment. Congratulations to everyone involved, including co-founders/publishers @nthornburgh & @mdgoulding , executive editor @charly_wilder , editor at large @chefjoseandres , co-founder/creative lead @douglas_hughmanick , art directors @thisiskultura and our phenomenal contributors @edelrodriguezstudio , @samaa.gaza , @roham128 , @jfierberg , @artep33 , @calvingodfrey , @julianahuxtable , @mpmagers , @gonzalezmariaj_ , @palisaanderson , @mikey.jauregui , @virgiliocentral , @mattymatheson , @juanescaloname , @nenginelson1 , @lawandoyler , @katieparla , @ericripert , @pawkhrua , @reneredzepinoma , @subparparks , @eugeniosignoroni , @tononrafa , @mswanawana , @samyoukilis , @the.bougie.dirtbag , @alejosabugo and many more. Our little watermelon man turns three today. Sometimes there are bitter seeds, or insipid rinds, but for the most part this life is pretty sweet and juicy. Eat it up, Dylan. @laurix86

Today marks the launch of a special new project with the New York Times. “Before It Disappears” is an ongoing series that casts a spotlight on endangered traditions in the food world, combining the remarkable images of Sam Youkilis with words and context from yours truly. This series is a longtime in the making—many months of work internally with the extraordinary editorial team at the Times, who build a beautiful home for this concept: @marcellehopkins @aburgessphoto @lyonse @kludt . For me personally, it’s an outgrowth of the work I’ve been doing for years—from our reporting at @roadsandkingdoms to the trio of books we created with Bourdain and @mpmagers to Omnivore, the documentary series I made with René Redzepi for Apple TV+. The series will take us to food traditions around the world, but it’s fitting that we begin this journey in Japan, a country that first opened my eyes to the importance of craft and specialization in a globalized world. Amidst the flattening tide of automation and scale, people like @terada_masaru and his team at Terada Honke work every day to show that we don’t need machines and shortcuts to make a business worth believing in. I’m incredibly fortunate to have @samyoukilis as a partner on this project. For anyone who knows Sam’s work, they understand his special talent for capturing the beauty and the importance of the daily rhythms and rituals most of us overlook. At the heart of this series is a simple truth: the reason many of our oldest traditions are imperiled is we no longer value the people and the practices that bring food to our tables. As Terada-san told me: “This is not about preserving the past, but about continuing to create new value for the future.” The same could be said about Before It Disappears. Give it a read (if you don’t subscribe to the Times, you can click on the link in my bio for a free view), share with your friends, and, above all, support the people in your communities making things by hand.

This week, we launched our new twice-weekly newsletter with the Food Chain, a series highlighting extraordinary chefs and producers around the world that’s structured around a simple idea: the chef profiled this week recommends the chef profiled the next. ”Having eaten with chefs across the world for the past few decades, I’ve never had a bad meal when a cook I respect is picking the place,” writes R&K co-founder Matt Goulding (@mdgoulding ) in his introduction to the series. “The Food Chain takes this principle to a global level.”  To start the series, we asked one of our favorite food writers in the world, Rafael Tonon (@tononrafa ) to interview the godfather of modernist cuisine himself, the great Spanish chef Ferran Adrià (@elbullifoundation_ferranadria ), creator of ElBulli and so many of the dishes that shaped today’s culinary landscape. To find out what chef is currently inspiring Ferran—and where the Food Chain is headed next—you’ll have to join Insiders, our new membership that starts at just $6.50 a month and gets you early access to our trips and events like the Anti-ICE Supper Club (more on the latter very, very soon). ➡️ Join now at the link in bio!

Thank you for sharing this road in a year that has been an especially significant one for us. In 2025, we started publishing again for the first time in six years. We made a print magazine for the first time ever. We launched a global membership and welcomed you on 23 League of Travelers journeys, including to nine new destinations, from Angola to Abruzzo to Yunnan. So to all of you who make it possible, we wish you health and happiness in the new year. We can’t wait for what’s next.

On a bone-cold Tuesday night in Chinatown NYC, we gathered a group of friends and accomplices to celebrate the launch of our first-ever print magazine, an 144-page, art-filled leap of faith in the idea that there’s an appetite for deeply felt, clear-eyed, good-humored storytelling on food, travel, and all that’s in between. Over lemongrass snail sausage, Bia hơi, and natural wines from the geniuses at @mam.nyc and @lairai.nyc at their newest space @phe.nyc , we talked about R&K’s beginnings as a half-baked Tumblr dreamed up in Yangon. We talked about the bolt from the blue that was Anthony Bourdain, the way our former partner’s passing left us adrift in more ways than one, and how much it means to be putting out a magazine now that feels like the clearest manifestation of what we’ve been about since the beginning. In attendance were so many of the people who make R&K what it is, from co-founders @nthornburgh and @mdgoulding and executive editor @charly_wilder to the artist behind our first print cover @edelrodriguezstudio and Bourdain-era collaborators like @lauriewoolever , @kwspoon1 , and @anupkaphle ; as well as indispensable members of the R&K team @mikey.jauregui , @gonzalezmariaj_ , and @jfierberg . Inumerable thanks to everyone who came through and helped make the night a fitting throw-down for this auspicious moment. But maybe we buried the lead. The magazine is here in our hands, and it’s a thing of beauty. Get yours at the link in our bio, directly from our store or included in Insiders membership. 📸 @jfierberg

This magazine has been many years in the making. Fourteen, to be exact; that’s how long it’s been since @nthornburgh @douglas_hughmanick and I launched this outfit on wing and a prayer and a Tumblr account from a dusty hotel in Yangon. Since then, @roadsandkingdoms has been through many permutations—from Tumblr to digital magazine to book publisher to Bourdain partners to production company to the League of Travelers—but the mission itself has never wavered: to find beauty and meaning through the lens of food and travel across the world. And so it is with this magazine. To say this is personal is a wild understatement. It begins with the same two words that changed so much for R&K and for me personally: Dear Tony. A letter to our former partner that forced me to unpack a lot of the baggage I’ve been lugging around since Bourdain died. At the heart of the magazine is a team of wildly talented writers, photographers, chefs and contributors covering everything from Nigerian salt cod to Vietnamese murder mysteries to survival cuisine in Gaza. Tucked in the back is a piece of short fiction I wrote about a lost umbrella in Tokyo illustrated by remarkable images from longtime friend and collaborator @mpmagers . Many incredibly talented people helped make this magazine reality, but chief among them is our incomparable executive editor @charly_wilder …If you’ve been following along over the years, been on the receiving end of any of R&K’s storytelling, benefited in any way from the thousands of free articles, videos and documentaries we’ve published since 2011, now is the time to support. Mash that link in the bio and pick up a copy. #printneverdies

What hole-in-the-wall Copenhagen cafe does René Redzepi (@reneredzepinoma ) call “an incredible, unique little spot in the Western Hemisphere”? Whose “psychotic” garnish blew away Chef’s Table creator Brian McGinn (@brimcgi )? What is Katie Parla’s (@katieparla ) best-kept secret hidden high among Sardinia’s untamed Supramonte? What is José Andrés’s (@chefjoseandres ) favorite restaurant in the world to eat crabs? You’ll find the answers to all of these questions in “The R&K 50,” our definitive, unranked global list of the restaurants our favorite chefs, writers, and eaters think of as second homes. We’re releasing the list in our new print magazine, available now from the R&K Store or through Insiders membership. Order now and get your copy by the holidays if you’re ordering stateside. We now ship worldwide, though delivery times may vary.
