#MarchMeetTheMaker2026 Introduce yourself and your small business - My name is Mary I’m an artist from #Salford. I studied Graphic Design at #LJMU in Liverpool, but I’m a painter at heart. I now live in #Scarborough on the East Coast, Where I work at @dexterssurfshop as a surf instructor, a swell šŸ˜‰ as a freelance artist. You may see some of this theme float through my designs. Over the years, my art has taken me further than I ever imagined. In 2012, I shared Antwerp Mansion with artists including U.S. rapper Jeru The Damaja, I’ve collaborated with big and tiny artists in Colombia and Guatemala, spoken about my practice to a New York audience at @lastfrontiernyc in 2023 during my Residency with @mothershipnyc , In January 2024, I was selected as one of nine international artists for the @r100studio x @foxhouselife Residency in Barcelona, curated by @reepsone - the following creatives took part and highly recommend you check out their work @simonwaldronfilm @portraitxo @tbaocreate @hausofila @dahexd @mickmcmean @chiwawa.beatbox @thalyahill Recently I was asked by Rochdale Council to deliver mural workshops inside Buckley Hall Prison — a project that deeply reminded me why art matters. The participants were able to temporarily escape in their creativity whilst building something together. This is one of the reasons I now run a Mural Club a project that so far has been supported by @thescarbfair @scarboroughartsquarter , - I believe art should be for everyone. Murals allow people to interact with art without having to pay or step foot into a building. It’s the ultimate accessible culture. I used to use art to disconnect from the world (Nothing wrong with this) but In the last 6 years I have been shown its true super power of connection. I want others to benefit from it in the way I have. Thank-you to everyone who has supported me and my work so far! If you want, you can buy my stuff from the following places šŸ‘ @shopatthesjt @dexterssurfshop @wanderstoreuk @mandyapplecollective @shaka_coffee_house @theoldcobblers.shop And my online shop šŸ”— in bio Marykimnaylor.bigcartel.com

A glimpse into our collaborative mural project with Sparks Community groups in Eastfield & Barrowcliff, Scarborough šŸŽ²āœØ Together with @thisisbobbyhick , we’ve been guiding the Tuesday Crafters & SAGE groups in creating a large-scale, transportable mural inspired by a timeline-style Snakes & Ladders board — exploring the ups, downs, setbacks and progress we all experience through life and mental health. Through conversation, reflection and shared creativity, every mark made becomes part of a much bigger story about support, resilience, and community ā¤ļø This project was made possible through the Scarborough Creative Cluster Mentoring Project, funded by Inspire and will be displayed as part of the @thescarbfair in the @scarboroughartsquarter Stay tuned to see more progress šŸ‘ . . . . #Mentalhealth #Sparks #CommunityMural #ScarboroughFair #MaryNaylor

Yesterday, I had the privilege of being invited into Sparks—a beautiful and welcoming community space in Eastfield, Scarborough. It’s full of fantastic people, things to do, and inspiring stuff to look at. Together with fellow artist @thisisbobbyhick We began leading two groups: Tuesday Crafters and SAGE, guiding them into creating a hefty, transportable, collaborative mural. The theme of the mural is an idea that has been floating around my mind for a while—originally intended as a personal, biographical painting. It takes the form of a time-lined Snakes and Ladders board game, documenting the ups and downs of life. But how perfectly does this concept translate into a shared experience? It becomes a vessel to explore and highlight our collective mental health journeys for a wider audience. During these sessions, we discuss, identify, or simply reflect on our experiences of setbacks and progress. In doing so, we can share advice, offer support, inspire one another, celebrate achievements—or just realise we are not alone in our thoughts and challenges. I know for certain every mark made and idea conveyed will later prompt more of this in the future viewers. My love for mural-making began in Colombia šŸ‡ØšŸ‡“ (read more about this on my website) šŸ”— in bio It’s a medium that connects people, breaks down barriers, and tells stories in powerful, accessible ways. Public art is so important. It exists for everyone—not just those who can visit galleries. It’s for people on their way to work, for those without physical access to traditional art spaces. All this was made possible by the ā€˜Scarborough Creative Cluster Mentoring Project ā€˜ - where I was paired with a more experienced artist, Bob, to mentor me in the area of community art—something I’ve dabbled briefly in and out of. Bob went above and beyond, as she clearly does in all her work. Rather than just offering theoretical advice, she got balls rolling, and my word how they roll. Funded by Inspire The final mural will eventually be shown down in the @scarboroughartsquarter opposite @mandyapplecollective on the side of Shop 49 Give Sparks a follow on Facebook to follow our progress

Photos by the talented @millynixonphotography go check out her page ā¤ļø This weekend at the @scarboroughfilmfestival I had the pleasure of taking part in a Q&A following the screening of Maya and the Wave — an incredibly inspiring documentary that dives into the emotional journey of big wave surfer Maya Gabeira @maya as she broke the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman, overcoming countless obstacles along the way. I was lucky to share the stage with @tori.scarboroughsurfschool — one of the first few female surfers in Scarborough, a Team England Junior Squad coach, @scarboroughboardridersclub , and surf coach at Secret Spot. Feeling so grateful to be surrounded by such a strong, inspiring community of women here in Scarborough. A huge thank you to @martha.cattell and @elizajaneb for inviting me and for building this great festival into its third year — you’ve done an amazing job. . . . . . #scarboroughfilmfestival

Last opportunity today to see the beautiful poetry of @lf_meleyal on the Glass Box Gallery I was commissioned to illustrate it for šŸŒ World Poetry Day Last week šŸ™ƒ Made possible by @this_isscarborough & @oldparcelsofficeartspace Ebb and Flow Morning arrives with pockets of light, not asking for anything. The trees hold small green lanterns at their tips, and the air tastes newly washed. I walk slower than yesterday, Gratitude sits beside me Like a warm stone in the sun. Spring light brightens the streets Colour returns where winter erased its name. The season keeps nothing forever. Old worries loosen their grip. The sea wind rearranges my thoughts. Salt rests on my lips. New horizons open. Waves keep their endless conversation with the shore, each one arriving, each one leaving Carrying no regret. I thank the tide for its lessons and release the cold thoughts I carried into the water. Lel Meleyal . . . . . . #MaryNaylorArtist #Worldpoetryday #illustration #scarborough #LelMeyelal
