I met Jenny a few years ago in a Waupoos church kitchen, where a group of local ladies had gathered to make mincemeat for charity. Since then, I’ve toured Mayphin Farm, played with happy goats and enjoyed her delicious produce (often). When I heard the Mayphins were expecting, it struck me that their little family farm was about to come into its own, joining the multigenerational farms all around them—the beginning of their County legacy.
ON THE COUNTY “Both Dan and I had visited the County on separate occasions and loved it, but officially moved here in 2017. It ticked off all of the boxes of things we were looking for in a community; great people, great food, access to farmland and the resources that go along with that.”
ON FARMING: “I resisted calling myself a farmer for a long time because it felt like something you needed to earn. I did all of the research, pestering our local CSA farm with relentless questions, then quit my job to do a full season internship. I called myself a farmer when the business was making enough for a farm business registration number and I officially changed my occupation for filing taxes.”
ON GOOD PEOPLE “Forever grateful to the County farmers who shared knowledge from the start— @bluewheelbarrow@fiddleheadfarmPEC@waupoossheep@sheepon7@cape_vineyards ”
ON GOOD TIMES “ @wellingtonfarmersmarket@mapleinthecounty all the wonderful Christmas events, just sharing meals with friends or a pint at the @cressymustard_waupoospub . And definitely hugs, I miss those.”
