scripted.space
The naming of scripted.space borrows loosely from the philosopher Bruno Latour’s concept of the ‘script’ in which he describes the influence of artefacts upon a person’s actions in the same way a script determines what an actor should be saying or doing at any point during a play. That is, the objects that surround us to some extent programme our actions whether a speed bump or a UX element (this understanding forms part of the basis of nudge theory).
'Scripted' hints at issues of performativity, programming, and, as the above Latour reference infers, control.
Space, for the purposes of this project, is seen as concerning all 'space' which has been permeated by the fields of (graphic) design and technology. In effect, everything and everywhere is now digital space; there is almost nowhere that has escaped some form of technological augmentation, intervention or translation. It is within this environment the scripts we are considering reside.
Lastly, scripted.space refers to the platform it inhabits, and the conventions of the conversation format that are played out upon it. Through these discussions with relevant practitioners scripted.space hopes to plot the spaces between actually existing practice and theory while examining the contexts these practitioners have situated themselves in relation to.
