IS SUSTAINABILITY BULLSHIT??
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting to the legend @cocktailman to answer this question
Take a look
I’ve been getting asked a lot lately what I’m doing for my birthday…
This.
Last October, after finishing my last ultra, I made a promise to myself: the next one would be before my birthday.
The timing didn’t exactly go to plan. The past three months have been rough—injured, dealing with a knee that just wouldn’t cooperate. There was a point where I had to slow down, reset, and decide how I wanted to show up.
A month ago, I made that decision.
Take my time. Trust the process. And run it on my birthday.
A few days ago, I came across something that stuck with me:
“It’s not about the running, it’s about who you become through the suffering.”
That’s it.
This isn’t just another run. It’s about pushing through, proving something to myself, and stepping into the next year stronger than I was before.
New year. New mindset. Same mission—finish what I started.
Ultra training usually means one run, and a few different surfaces, and a very early start.
Been putting the Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL through exactly that - from road to gravel to hard pack before sunrise.

Just finished another training half marathon and it’s got me reflecting on this year of running.
When I stopped playing professional sport, running was always my thing. Not the gym — just getting outside, putting one foot in front of the other. I ran a lot. Half marathons, marathons. I loved the process.
Then life got busy. Work, travel, injuries. I tried to come back a few times, but the cycle kept repeating and running slowly disappeared.
In October 2024 I was filming in Berlin during BCB. When the footage came out weeks later, I didn’t recognise myself. Constant travel. Eating on the road. Drinking too much. No routine. I was 105kg — and I knew something had to change.
So in February this year, I started running properly again. And anyone who runs knows… the beginning sucks. It hurts. It’s uncomfortable. It’s hard. But I’ve always believed there’s something powerful in leaning into that discomfort — into the solitude, the darkness, the discipline.
I made a simple promise to myself: show up, be consistent, and stop making excuses.
Today I’m 23kg lighter. Running feels easier. And I genuinely love it again.
What running has reminded me is this: it keeps you humble. You can always go faster. You can always go further. But no matter how much you succeed or fail, you always start again at zero.
Nothing is permanent. And you always get another chance
Thanks for the constant inspiration @hercuules@sweetslewis@mo.abdinn
