One Dance - Drake, Wizkid, Kyla Whewwww there is so much when it comes to the making of One Dance. I’m just scratching the surface here! It spent FIFTEEN weeks at number 1 in the UK, and recently Spotify shared that it’s their top streamed song featuring a female artist. It didn’t pick up and major awards and there wasn’t an official video (Drake did make a short film for the album but not for One Dance specifically) and the only dedicated live performance I could find was from SNL, but this was a song that you could not escape for the long hot summer of 2016. The fact that Kyla hadn’t even heard the genre of UK Funky before Do You Mind was mixed is crazy. And the influence it’s now had on music worldwide is so impressive. We need a dedicated Wizkid video for this one too, if you have any stories, holla because there’s limited info out there! Do you remember hearing Do You Mind out back in 2008/09? From Take Yo Praise by @nanacamilleyarbrough_ to Praise You - this was @officialfatboyslim ’s first solo uk number 1! When Camille was growing up, she saw Josephine Baker perform in Chicago. She spoke up on racial issues, which wasn’t necessarily safe to do so at the time. That was a lightbulb moment for Camille - she could weave the very real topic into her music. In 1975 she released Take Yo Praise on her album Iron Pot Cooker. Norman Cook said Camilles voice has a beautiful quality to it and that the beauty of the lyrics is that it works at festivals, football matches etc. ‘it’s communal, affirmative and uplifting’ Does this story surprise you?
