Egyptian Cotton Arkestra
Sun Ra tells us “it’s all about people doing something else other than what they have done” and each time Egyptian Cotton Arkestra plays they do something they haven’t done before. The group fits loosely under the umbrellas of free jazz, spiritual jazz, and free improvisation. But we’re defined by nothing other than our bodies and minds and instruments, our responses to each other and to the sound bouncing around the room, our musical language constructing itself in the moment at a given time and place.

Egyptian Cotton Arkestra did a sweet little interview with @anythingeverything.mtl for @newfeelingcoop and you can go to their page and find it through their links because linking to things on the main is a nightmare 😅.
We take over Friends House for a comfy-cozy night of noise—with Markus Floats and members of Montreal free-jazz ensemble Egyptian Cotton Arkestra, and a collective of Toronto improvisers playing with household instruments and implements.
Montréal/Tiotia’ke-based composer and musician Markus Floats takes over Friends House for a night of “cozy skronk”.
Playing alongside members of the free-jazz ensemble Egyptian Cotton Arkestra, Markus Floats weaves his electronic improvisations with the ambient guitar musings of Lucas Huang and the fierce yet soothing tones of saxophonist James Goddard.
Opening the evening are Toronto improvisers HOMEBODIES, an ad-hoc ensemble of local artists (Allison Cameron, Aliyah Aziz, Deniz Tafaghodi, Wesley Shen, and Lucas Dvorsky) bringing together forms of ‘at-home’ listening—including activating a collection of household electric organs—to create a collective, intuitive performance.

Markus Floats x NO MUSIC FOR GENOCIDE 💿🚫
Artists & Record Labels: geoblock your music in Israel! Go to @nomusicforgenocide to learn more and view the over 400 artists/labels who’ve already joined.
The action is simple but powerful: request geo-restriction of music in Israel across DSPs.
No Music for Genocide is a new cultural boycott initiative asking artists and rights-holders to remove their music from streaming platforms in Israel in response to its genocide in Gaza; ethnic cleansing of the Occupied West Bank; apartheid within Israel; and political repression of Pro-Palestine efforts wherever we live. This is a decentralized, global volunteer movement with no institutional backer.
This tangible act is just one step toward honoring Palestinian demands to isolate and delegitimize Israel as it kills without consequence on the world stage. The successful cultural boycotts against apartheid South Africa prove that our creative work grants us agency and power. When we wield it together, we add unified pressure to a growing, global, interdependent movement, from Hollywood to the docks of Morocco. We don’t boycott to target individuals: this is a rejection of apartheid Israel’s cultural industry, which works hand in hand with global music and media institutions to whitewash apartheid and genocide.
NO ART FOR APARTHEID, NO MUSIC FOR GENOCIDE. FREE PALESTINE.
With love & solidarity,
The NMFG team
Egyptian Cotton Arkestra are a gift and today they manifest this gift with the surprise release of their long-awaited debut album ‘Time & Place’. Get your ears on a digital copy today and pre-order vinyl coming later this fall. Tipped for lovers of Sun Ra Arkestra; Henry Grimes; Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre; Ravel; Susan Alcorn; post-reunion Earth. Music and vibes like none other. This is the Time & Place.
Egyptian Cotton Arkestra was started in 2017 in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal by James Goddard (mbira, saxophone), who invited three mutually unfamiliar collaborators—Ari Swan (violin), Markus Lake (bass), Lucas Huang (drums)—to join him for what was supposed to be a one-off ensemble. With no plan and no rehearsal, we played a sparse, hesitant, meditative set of abstract jazz, punctuated by swelling crescendos and bursts of grindcore-style chaos. We stumbled onto our signature sound on the first swing. We have played together, occasionally and locally, ever since.

skin tone and markus floats have collaborated across many different projects over the years weaving together free jazz, electro-acoustic sounds and writings related to their interest in the politics and practices of liberation. They are pleased to present a combined set in one of their favourite kinds of places - a library.
And we, it must be said (with gusto and passion!), are immensely pleased to be presenting this very special show at Sappyfest 20!

Eric Chenaux Trio plays Montréal on May 21st at La Sala Rossa, co-presented by Constellation.
Eric is joined by Ryan Driver (Wurlitzer organ) & Philippe Melanson (electronic percussion), performing music from their latest album Delights Of My Life (Constellation, May 2024)—a suite of drifting, soulful ballads stitched together with telepathic interplay and melodic abstraction.
Also on the bill: Markus Floats Ensemble, whose layered, synth-driven compositions explore the overlap between electronic minimalism and avant-jazz improvisation.
Markus is joined by Ari Swan, James Goddard, and Lucas Huang.
