Mark and I met doing Like a Version with @jack_river , not long after we decided to try taking poems and stories and turning them into song. Weâve spent the last year at @goldenretrieverstudios working with Simon and weâve had a bunch of friends come in and play along with us too. @eric_avery_music@mudjingaalyangamba@jumbunna_ Our music is about connection to Country and language and culture, homecoming and love and joy and grief. Both Mark and I are visual artists too and weâre making art together to form a group of works that go along with each of the songs. We are Cooee and we canât wait to share all of this with you.

So special to have @cooeemusic on @banksiarrr@3rrrfm this week to yarn about debut album Messengers đ
They spoke about their creative collaboration where the songs were all written based on existing poems of Kirliâs and demos of Mark, and where their songs speak to themes of connection to and caring for Country, language and culture, grief and joy. They also spoke about their approach in creating videos and artworks to accompany both album and single releases.
Kirli spoke about lead single Welcome which tells the story of travelling back to her Great Grandmotherâs (Mary Elizabeth Stephenâs) Gunai Country, and connecting with the Land, Skies and Waters there.
Building on their creative collaboration, in 2025 Kirli wrote childrenâs book Beyond the Shore which features illustrations by Mark and gently encourages young ones to step beyond fear into curiosity.
