“The Dancing Plague has been over a year in the making—a concept for a short film that
@alexleggatt and I have nurtured, shaped, and obsessed over endlessly. This film builds on my ongoing exploration of motherhood and pregnancy, focusing on feminine rage and rebellion. It follows the story of a medieval woman breaking free from societal expectations to live on her own terms. The piece confronts ever-topical themes of female bodily autonomy, the cultural subjugation of women and girls, and the consequences they face when they refuse to submit.
In Medieval England, women who fell outside of accepted societal norms were conveniently removed from society under the guise of being “witches”. In retrospect, we can see how these very women were victims of mental illness and deprivation. This film will challenge deep-rooted beliefs about “witches”, and suggest that this community of outcasts are the only ones who can truly save our protagonist.
Please donate and share our crowdfunder with your mothers, sisters, grandmothers and neighbourhood witches.”
