What does it mean to search for life in a world shaped by mobility, capital, and labor? Tonight, @tba_21 and @museothyssen will inaugurate @stephaniecomilang "Search for Life", an immersive exploration of diaspora, survival, and interconnectedness curated by @the_chus_martinez “Search for Life” marks Comilang's first major solo exhibition in Spain and features a totalizing large-scale film and textile installation, offering a profound reflection on histories and identities among different forms of life on our planet. The film depicts global maritime cargo movements and the role of Filipino seafarers, and intertwines stories from various figures, including historians, seafarers, a Mexican boy, and the monarch butterfly. Alongside the film, textile creations made of pineapple fiber allude to the Spanish colonial past and fill the room with images of the natural world. In 2020, as part of the 'The Current II: Spheric Ocean: Life For Beginners' fellowship cycle led by Chus Martínez, Comilang collaborated with @tba21academy to create the film “Diaspora Ad Astra” (available on Ocean-Archive.org), which shed light on the challenges faced by Filipino seafarers—400,000 strong—who play a crucial role in global trade yet endure brutal conditions and prolonged separation from their families. This poignant exploration of diaspora and longing resonates deeply with the themes in "Search for Life." If you’re in Madrid, join us at @museothyssen as we embark on this transformative journey and migration through Comilang's monarch butterflies and Filipino sailors, and witness firsthand the power of art to inspire change and allow us to imagine a world with no borders. #stephaniecomilang #searchforlife21 #enbuscadelavida21 #museothyssen #tba21

Join us in Santo Domingo for the first public moment of The Current IV Caribbean! 🇩🇴 🐚 The Current IV Caribbean: Convening #1 December 8–9, Parque de Iberoamericana, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel Convening #1: “… para contar transformaciones oceánicas” [telling of oceanic transformations] is a two-day multidisciplinary festival of conversations, workshops, screenings, and contemporary dance, featuring a wide range of contributors from artists to architects, dancers, paleontologists, and many others. Taking inspiration from the evolution of the marine channel that left behind Rincón Lagoon, Lake Enriquillo, and Lake Azuéi, as well as specific species of the region, such as corals and the endemic Coccothrinax palm, the program investigates how we can—from our human bodily nature and perceptive capacity—establish relationships with the immense scale of oceanic and geological transformations and reconcile with the Ocean's constant movement

Just leaving Cocos Island 550km off the coast of Costa Rica after having returned to the island 9 years after the @tba21academy project The Treasure of Lima: a buried exhibition curated by Nadim Samman (for more information follow the link in my bio). Since 1997 Cocos Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site partially also because: "Natural population densities of large top predators indicate a near pristine conservation status of a property that is among the most important sites in the Eastern Tropical Pacific for the protection of large pelagic migratory species, such as the endangered Scalloped Hammerhead Shark and the near-threatened Silky Shark and Galapagos Shark." To be totally honest it's been quite shocking to see the changes to a mainly uninhabited island but especially it's marine environment. Yes we are in the middle of an El Niño year and some scientists talk about a marine heatwave, which makes the waters too warm for many migratory shark species. But Randall Arauz from @cremacostarica tells us that the now crotically endangered Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks as well as the vulnerable Silky Sharks constantly fall victim to commercial longlining fishing operations raoming the Costa Rican waters year round. The Treasure of Lima: a buried exhibition contributed to the research done on the migratory patterns of sharks and there is clear evidence that if there was a no fishing corridor established between Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador the positive impact on sharks and turtles would be immense, and the science is also clear on where the corridor should be. Yet the Costa Rican government is not able to make a couragous and examplary decision despite the Ecuadorian colleagues leading the way. Costa Rica will be co-host of the next UN Ocean Conference in Nice 2025 and still has a way better reputation for its conservation practices then their leadership demonstrates right now. Come on Costa Rica you can do much better

After four incredible days of learning with and about the Garifuna community in Livingston, guided by our fantastic hosts Camilla Caris- co-founder of Museo Del Mundo, Izabel Bermúdez-director of the Museo Del Mundo and Clyde Garcia- Garifuna language teacher, we dove into history, language, music and food. Fellow Monique Johnson shared her knowledge about the volcanic history of the Caribbean plate and their importance in shaping the mountain ranges in the region, both above and below water. Upon arrival back in Guatemala city we participated in the opening of the @bienaldeartepaiz before bringing the first #flotation of The Current IV lead by Yina Jimenez Suriel to an end. We're off to a fantastic start and I'll surely continue sharing more about the program here #TheCurrentIV #tba21academy #tba21

I haven't posted in a long time, as there has just been too much going on. But yesterday we've embarked on a new journey with TBA21–Academy's curatorial fellowship program The Current and this really warrents me coming out of social media hiding. The fourth cycle of The Current is situated in the Caribbean and lead by Yina Jimenez Suriel under the title "otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua". The Current IV intends to contribute to the emancipatory processes in the region that have sought to bring its inhabitants closer to the Ocean and began in the high mountains above sea level. The project will focus on identifying, studying, and spreading knowledge of the aesthetic strategies of improvisation, active listening, body movement, and other tools generated over centuries by the Garifuna communities and as a result of the Maroon experience in the insular and continental Caribbean region, currently located in the nation-states of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. To join her on this journey Yina has invited the artists Tessa Mars and Nadia Huggins, as well as philosopher Dénètem Touam Bona and Earth scientist Monique Johnson. Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, Ayumi Amzai Gallagher and I have joined the group yesterday climbing the Pacaya Volcano kindly guided by curator and activist Maya Juracán and her partner Julián Martinez who is a documentary filmmaker and hiker. Today we've arrived in Livingston where we will participate in a number of workshops hosted by Izabel Bermúdez and Camila Caris of Museo del Mundo which was established in 2016 as a virtual museum dedicated to researching, documenting, exhibiting, educating and showcasing various artistic practices, with special attention to artisanal expressions from around the world. thecurrentIV #flotation #tba21academy #tba21
