ENG - First glance✨ This week the residency officially began with a first encounter between the artists, the curator, and the Complesso Monumentale — a moment marked by curiosity and exchange. Together, we took part in a guided tour of the complex, offering participants a deeper understanding of its history, architecture, and context. The opening also became an occasion to get to know one another and begin building the relationships that will accompany the residency over the coming months. Some friends of Santa Croce were also present, contributing to making this first gathering even more meaningful. 🫂 ITA - Primo sguardo✨ Questa settimana la residenza è ufficialmente iniziata con un primo incontro tra le artiste, il curatore e il Complesso Monumentale — un momento segnato da curiosità e scambio. Insieme abbiamo partecipato ad una visita guidata del complesso, offrendo ai partecipanti una comprensione più profonda della sua storia, architettura e contesto. L’apertura è stata anche un’occasione per conoscersi e iniziare a costruire le relazioni che accompagneranno la residenza nei prossimi mesi. Erano presenti anche alcuni amici di Santa Croce, che hanno contribuito a rendere questo primo incontro ancora più significativo.🫂

- Mares Landscapes II - ENG - In the agricultural landscape surrounding Tenuta La Fiscala, natural and productive layers coexist, telling a story of continuous transformation. Trunere, structures linked to land and resource management, are part of this system, marking a direct relationship between architecture and agricultural practice. Tales is part of an environment where the natural and the built do not stand in opposition, but coexist as part of a single evolving system. IT - Nel paesaggio agricolo che circonda Tenuta La Fiscala convivono stratificazioni naturali e produttive che raccontano una storia di trasformazioni continue. Le trunere, strutture legate alla gestione del territorio e delle risorse, si inseriscono in questo sistema, segnando una relazione diretta tra architettura e pratica agricola. Tales è parte di un ambiente in cui naturale e costruito non si oppongono, ma coesistono come parte di un unico sistema in evoluzione.

- Mares Landscapes I - ENG - Tenuta La Fiscala is a courtyard farmstead, typical of the rural landscape between Piedmont and Lombardy. As suggested in the visual essay published in the Ruins catalogue (@lorenzomorandi.it @_lemonot ), these architectures are not simply traces of the past, but stratified systems that evolve over time, maintaining a continuity between memory and use. La Fiscala is part of this context: an estate where fields, trees, and architectural fragments shape the environment that will accompany the artists in residence during the second edition of Mares. IT - Tenuta La Fiscala è una cascina a corte chiusa, tipica del paesaggio rurale tra Piemonte e Lombardia. Come suggerisce il visual essay pubblicato nel catalogo di Ruins (@lorenzomorandi.it @_lemonot ), queste architetture non sono semplici tracce del passato, ma sistemi stratificati che si trasformano nel tempo, mantenendo una continuità tra memoria e uso. La Fiscala si inserisce in questo contesto: una tenuta in cui campi, alberi e frammenti architettonici costruiscono l’ambiente che accompagnerà le artiste in residenza durante la seconda edizione di Mares.

ENG - Among the rural architectures of the Fraschetta, Tenuta La Fiscala holds a history shaped by passages, ownership, and transformations. Established in the 16th century on land marked by the absences left by the plagues, the estate has layered over time as a site of labour, dwelling, and continuous redefinition. The spaces that now host the artists — once dedicated to silkworm farming — still carry traces of a slow, cyclical, and silent form of production. Just a few minutes away from the Complesso Monumentale di Santa Croce, La Fiscala has been, since the beginning of Mares, the place that hosts the everyday dimension of the residency: a space of staying, listening, and sharing. IT - Tra le architetture rurali della Fraschetta, Tenuta La Fiscala custodisce una storia fatta di attraversamenti, proprietà e trasformazioni. Nata nel XVI secolo su una terra segnata dalle assenze delle pesti, la tenuta si stratifica nel tempo come luogo di lavoro, abitazione e continua ridefinizione. Gli spazi che oggi accolgono le artiste — un tempo dedicati all’allevamento del baco da seta — portano ancora tracce di una produzione lenta, ciclica, silenziosa. A pochi minuti di distanza dal Complesso Monumentale di Santa Croce, La Fiscala è, fin dall’inizio di Mares, il luogo che ospita la dimensione quotidiana della residenza: uno spazio di permanenza, ascolto e condivisione.

EN - Welcome to Mares, Jorge Van den Eynde Gray ✨ invited by founders @amins_a and @tatianapalenzonaa as guest curator for this year’s edition. Jorge Van den Eynde Gray is an in(ter)dependent curator, editor and researcher based in Madrid. His work moves between exhibitions, editorial projects and research, exploring the porous boundaries between categories such as body and technology, magic and science, nature and culture. Through speculative approaches and narrative experimentation, his curatorial practice investigates how art can open alternative imaginaries and ways of thinking about the present. EN - Welcome to Mares Krizia Leon Porta ✨ Krizia Leon Porta investigates how landscape carries ideas of power shaped by Western systems of thought - and how these structures continue to shape the present. Through drawing and painting, she creates unstable environments where forms resist fixed identities, dissolving between earth and sky. Her work challenges dominant ways of imagining territory and reconsiders how images construct meaning. IT - Benvenuta a Mares Krizia Leon Porta ✨ Krizia Leon Porta indaga come il paesaggio veicoli idee di potere modellate da sistemi di pensiero occidentali - e come queste logiche influenzino ancora il presente. Attraverso disegno e pittura crea ambienti instabili, in cui le forme sfuggono a identità fisse e si dissolvono tra terra e cielo. Il suo lavoro mette in discussione le modalità dominanti di immaginare il territorio e di costruire significato.

EN - Welcome to Mares, Benedetta Fioravanti ✨ - “In my opinion, working with moving images is, above all, an act of empathy” Benedetta Fioravanti works with moving images, video and film to explore emotional and relational dynamics. Her practice moves through personal and collective narratives, investigating intimacy, vulnerability and the subtle tensions that shape human experience. IT - Benvenuta a Mares, Benedetta Fioravanti ✨ - “Per me, lavorare con le immagini in movimento è prima di tutto un atto di empatia” Benedetta Fioravanti lavora con le immagini in movimento, il video e il film per esplorare dinamiche emotive e relazionali. La sua pratica attraversa narrazioni personali e collettive, indagando intimità, vulnerabilità e le tensioni sottili che modellano l’esperienza umana.

EN - Welcome to Mares, Martina Ferrari. ✨ - “Accustomed to the process of becoming rock” Martina Ferrari works across photography, installation, books and sound to explore high-altitude landscapes as performative case studies. Mountains become sensory terrains that unsettle instinctive perceptions of space and time, activating extreme bodily sensations. Her practice explores how imaginaries influence the way we perceive landscapes, objects and identities. Through shifts between beings and spaces, human and non-human, she questions fixed perspectives and imposed meanings, opening up new possibilities for relation and coexistence. 🪨🪨🪨 IT - Benvenuta a Mares, Martina Ferrari. ✨- “Assuefatta al processo di diventare roccia” Martina Ferrari lavora tra fotografia, installazione, libro e suono per esplorare i paesaggi d’alta montagna come casi studio performativi. La montagna diventa un territorio sensoriale che altera la percezione dello spazio-tempo e attiva sensazioni corporee estreme. La sua pratica esplora come gli immaginari influenzino il modo in cui percepiamo paesaggi, oggetti e identità. Attraverso slittamenti tra esseri e spazi, umano e non umano, mette in discussione visioni fisse e significati imposti, aprendo a nuove possibilità di relazione e coesistenza.

EN - Welcome to Mares, Lucia Cristiani. ✨ Lucia Cristiani works with landscape as a living, imaginative terrain where inner and outer worlds meet. Bodies, objects and places become sites of relation - charged with desire, memory, fear and transformation. Her practice traces how bonds shape identities and ecosystems, weaving together pre-human, dreamlike and political imaginaries into open, relational mappings. IT - Benvenuta a Mares, Lucia Cristiani.✨ Lucia Cristiani lavora con il paesaggio come territorio vivo e immaginifico, in cui mondi interiori ed esteriori si incontrano. Corpi, oggetti e luoghi diventano spazi di relazione - attraversati da desiderio, memoria, paura e trasformazione. La sua pratica indaga come i legami plasmino identità ed ecosistemi, intrecciando immaginari pre-umani, onirici e politici in mappature aperte e relazionali.
