Aleph will open its doors again for Red-Yellow-Blue Friday and Saturday from 10-4pm. For part of the hang this year I wanted to try something different with a shelf structure to help hold works on one of the walls. I constructed this is in Birch ply to ‘sit’ across a glazed internal wall within the gallery, the glazing had been ‘greyed-out’ … so no fixings are able to attach to the back (as this is glass). It was so pleasing on the 1st instal day that all my pre-cut pieces fitted perfectly and I had no use of screws or glue, the dowel joints on the verticals all lined up and it’s all held securely by the side panels that are attached to the angled reveals. Normally works are on a hanging system from above, and last year I double hung four works; two screen prints and two ‘Over-Lay’ works … Oil works painted directly over editions of the bottom right screen print. Again I wanted to have a collective of works, similar to the salon hang wall of small works from last year’s Congruent Sym solo. The bespoke shelf system successfully allows this collective and it has given the glass wall of the gallery, a very different feel. The four shelves hold 16 works: Top shelf: five screen prints Top middle: three freehand ‘hairline’ pencil drawings and 1 Stoke ink Lower middle: Oil on Paper painting and two Blk-Blu screen prints Lower shelf: two Oil on Ply paintings and two 1 Stroke inks . . . So lovely to be informed that 2 ink works were SOLD over the weekend … thank you Cath. The copper on oak gall is an early 1 Stoke in series #7, in the first sym form I worked with (2024) mounted in a reclaimed Brazilian wood frame and the Golden Rod on oak gall is one of the most recent 1 Stroke #57 (2026) framed in Ash made specifically for the show. These the plant dye inks were made by my wife @georgina_barney for @plantdyestudio she makes the inks and more usually dyes, for her wool-works. . . . Red-Yellow-Blue I’m pleased to announce that Red-Yellow-Blue my exhibition at Aleph Contemporary, in Stroud has been extended with additional weekly opening days through May too. . Exhibition runs until 16th May . This is my second solo with Aleph, exhibiting several new larger 1 Stroke ink paintings on paper using plant dye, vintage and Indian inks. There are 33 works on show, to complement the new ink works we have selected linked pieces from my studio archive; oil on paper, drawings and prints. 1LC Symm+R Scarlet 11 a 64x57 cm oil painting on paper is oldest work from 15 years ago. Actually a favourite of mine, often mistaken for a screen print. This solid Sym structure has inspired several other works, most recently a pair of A4 Ed.of 20 Riso prints of last year. A few of these are available from the studio at £80 framed DM me if your interested. Enjoyed this evenings PV at Aleph, Great to see Reu and Natasha, who came up from Bristol early doors. I’ve been invited to paint no.10 of the 14 Stations of the Cross. 3 Stroke painting using Brazilian Wood grit ink from yesterday’s batch … 4th (spirit) stoke in the background is filtered Brazilian Wood ink. No.10 is the crucifix, each of 3 Strokes starts at the origin of the puncture wound of the nails. . . . 3S BW 26 Hand made Brazilian Wood ink on 300g Fabriano cotton paper 26x18 cm 2026 At Holy Cross, Chris Gollon (1963-2017) Stations of the Cross was my first exposure to original art. We had traditional craft but no art in our home. On a Sunday our family joined the Polish community, who would, on mass, catch-up on gossip at Holy Cross, Harlow for a Roman Catholic mass held in Polish and Latin. Taken as a baby, 1st communion, my father’s funeral service was there too in 1985. As with tradition … all the sons of the congregation became alter boys, you had no choice in the matter, as the youngest of six … I was the last one! No one could take my place … as 15 year old, I stood up to my parents and frail Babcia to tell them … I’m a non-believer and I did not want to go anymore. . . . My wife Georgina has taken our 8 year old daughter to All Saints for a while now, and there she found out about the … ‘Forty Days and Forty Nights’ Lenten Community Art Project … she expressed an interest in it and our little family were given 3 stations, we will display them together at the church. . . . Georgina - 9. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem (Luke 23.27-31) . Marek - 10. Jesus is crucified (Mark 15.24) . Scout - 12. Jesus on the cross; his mother and his friend (John  19.26,27) . . . The Stations of the Cross, a traditional devotional practice for Lent and Holy Week dating back to the 14th Century.
