Brainwaves (Sunbeam Upgrade), 72 x 74cm, gouache pencil crayon acrylic intaglio print on paper, 2026.
Currently on show in the Open:Odyssey @hastings.contemporary ontemporary with @sussexcontemporary fun opening on Friday now go see for yourself.
Wrote this in the submission -
It is a gouache, pencil crayon and acrylic image over an original etching of the first nuclear bomb. The bomb itself is obscured yet its complex construction pervades the image. An empty vessel is buffeted by a powerful force, ahead is a brain-like cloud, perhaps the cause of the storm, perhaps as lost and out of control as the ship? If this work is an Odyssey it is a journey in time and space.
We look to the past to make sense of the present and predict the future. We learn from our mistakes and course correct - disaster averted. We look at the world around and discover a complex place. We hold perhaps the most complex object in existence in our heads, yet too often see things simply. We think we know how things work. In our hubris we travel from the past, thinking we know all that we see, congratulating ourselves along the way, only to make the same mistakes again. Yet the sun still shines….until time’s arrow snuff it out.

Demon’s Fingers (Union Upgrade), 72 x 74cm, pencil, gouache, acrylic, intaglio print on paper, 2025
Inspired by Laplace’s Demon - posting this again as I see it as part of a group of 3. Recently had them beautifully framed by @project78 in Hastings Thanks. Showing one of the group in Open:Odyssey @hastingsContemporary
It is a gouache and pencil image over an original etching of the first nuclear bomb.
Scale is unclear, time is frozen. Grotesque fingers reach in to pinch a peculiar object. The object complex and detailed, yet menacingly dirty, like the fingers themselves. The digits are poised; as if turning over an exquisite precision time piece for fascinated inspection, yet equally they hold the power to squash the object out of existence.
DM if interest in purchasing - £1000.

Always Sometimes, 2022, oil on canvas, 35 x 28 cm
Friend to the previous painting.
Again, trying to grasp colour, and not spending too much time doing it. See previous post text too.
I either stop here, or head off into a dirge of disappointment – mistakes, thrills and spills get lost, lose faith, claw things back only to come out some tiny incremental step further into the temporarily refreshing unknown. If I’m lucky.
That, for me, is painting. Cleaning the paint off your fingers becomes tedious, playing with light – that’s show business.

Everything Will Be, 2022, oil on canvas, 35 x 28 cm
Thought I’d post this painting after the demon’s finger drawing.
The ‘OK ape hand’ is an image I’ve been toying with for ages – not yet fully exploited, or shelved. It feels like something I need to work through with more versions to find out if it’s got legs, or if it really should just stay in stock-image-emoji-gif-land.
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea (fact?) that when your fingers are touching something they really aren’t touching... A virtually infinitely divisible space lies between them – electrons spinning round nuclei, forces attracting and repelling, measured in mind-blowingly small distances like angstroms on the scale of Planck’s.
Sophomoric fanboy know-nothing I am – but it is all in there somehow, even if I can’t articulate it scientifically correctly.
This painting is for sale – interested? DM me.

Union – Upgrade Oops, 2025, pencil crayon and gouache on intaglio etching on paper, 64 x 68cm unframed.
Thinking about decisions made and yet to make – right or wrong, branching possibilities, receding routes taken. Also wholes and holes and circles.
Oops seemed to work in a Two Ronnies and Hudsucker Proxy sort of way.
Bonus accompanying image: Plan For a Tree, 2002 – I enjoyed this diagram (found, I think, in Jacob Bronowski’s The Ascent of Man or a related book – none of this is fact-checked!) and liked its retro-future design. What it illustrated, I believe, were all the various apparent false starts in the human/primate family tree.
This drawing is for sale unframed – interested? DM me.

Demon’s Fingers, 2025, pencil and gouache on intaglio etching on paper, 70 x 74cm framed.
Our digital dexterity can symbolise human exceptionalism – attempts to put our finger on that which evades us.
From mild intrigue to total awe, assisted by our opposable thumb and forefinger, we turn objects over, measure and sense the world around us. We log what we can for later recall to assist our future predictions.
Yet the flipside – of the chewed plastic coin – reveals hubris. We foolishly commend our furry friends for ‘aping’ our actions with nut, stick, turd or our detritus. From our clouds of confusion, oblivious to our blind spots, we tell ourselves the way the world is and will be.
This drawing emerged from a cloudy thought and became what it is – an attempt to picture ‘an attempt to understand’ through doing. Only later did I come across Laplace’s Demon with its cloudless knowledge of everything: initial conditions known perfectly, and by extension absolute powers to determine all that will come. Itself a thought experiment formed in the clouds.
My guess? To build a computer – a Laplace’s Demon – to perfectly predict the future, it would need to be exactly the size of everything... but then no-one asked me.
Maths and Science give us shortcuts and stories to help us find our way. We invent things, gods and demons – we also make bombs and play with fire.
This drawing is for sale – the above is really just fumbling words, but what I could say for certain is the price – interested? DM me.

Pink Bonus Manet Bit-part Flower Painting. 25 x 20cm, oil on linen. 2025
My prompt: make a simple flower painting for each colour of the rainbow using the mnemonic Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain – and don’t make it take too long.
Working in my temperature-controlled basement, drawing on my personal ‘Small Language Model’ - archive of school still-life experience, Google searches, memory, and all the paintings I’ve made before – these are the results.
As soon as something ‘clicked’ with each painting, I went with it. The titles came after, reflecting on the results and what perhaps caused that ‘click’ – clues to where I’d veered off prompt.
Each painting £220 plus P&P if available. DM me if interested.
