Unfortunately the material details were left off my gallery label, so if anyone finds me here:
It’s handwoven by me, using antique cotton, bleached cotton and Seacell (seaweed fibre) with silk yarns. The wooden header which it’s mounted in was made for me by Addy White.
It’s a piece that speaks of our pre-conceptions - how we imagine our lives will turn out - versus what actually happens. The drawn threads, which loop down in front, leave a space at the heart of it. It’s fragile but still held together.
I was also meditating on the ebb and flow of water, close to where I live, which is representative of emotions and life in dream analysis. And of course, Penelope, who undid her weaving every night to avoid having to wed.
The finished piece also reminds me of a yoke - a collar, a weight - I visited the watery world of the Fens recently to see where 3x generations of my ancestors worked the land and looked after the horses. When arriving in the Fens and dropping down below sea level, the sky opens out and looks bigger. It feels like entering a dreamscape.

I made this handwoven mounted piece ‘Head’ in response to the recent exhibition by Phillip Guston at the Tate.
Reflecting on the needless violence across the world today, I was moved to tears when reading about his experiences and his feelings of being powerless.
This piece of weaving explores vulnerability and fragility.

CONVOLUTION
Handwoven by me. I made this piece thinking about how life isn’t linear. There are things that throw us off our paths and shape us.
Made with Burmilana wool, vintage spun silk, wild silk and hand stitched.
DM me for more details.

I’m having a little sort out in the workshop. I loved making these pieces and found I have one left, from the last time I had some woven work in @hastings.contemporary 🤍
Using the symbol for water, woven into a brocade using silk and linen, with sedge stems collected from the banks of my stream.

If everyone aimed to be even half as good as David Attenborough, the world would instantly be a much better place 🤍

…
Skeletal branches on the beach today.
Weathered and bleached by the sea and sun.
A whole old tree has landed on the shingle.
Tides come in, tides go out.
The shoreline changes immensely with the seasons.
This spring, there’s lots of sand.

I popped into the Odyssey exhibition today @hastings.contemporary with my cousin, to show her my work and it was lovely to go back and have a deeper look. I am completely in awe of this exquisite piece of work by @miss.corkermarin - its teeny hand embroidered stitches using hair, and the workmanship of the tiny figure is incredible. I once made a weeny shirt and ironing board cover for @wilfridwoodsculptor and that was challenging enough. This is just beautiful 🤍

Today is Armenian Genocide day.
Each year, as well as thinking of my own family members; and those who were murdered and those who survived; and then the holocaust, which was the result of no swift accountability from this one, and so on; I also think of the world in the present day, and how with each year that passes - humanity appears to be edging away from sense and compassion. It’s a crushing feeling. One of frustration - and also fear for the future. We are all well aware today of how commodified hatred can make people try to justify the most unjust acts.
On the right is my great grandfather, Jakob Künzler. Orphaned at 4, he was not perfect; he had frustrations and annoyances like the rest of us, but he was a humanist and a good man with an abundance of integrity. He, along with my great grandmother Elisabeth, teamed up with other good people to show admirable and immense compassion and healing in a world of insidious hatred. Their good hearts made a difference to many thousands.
Choose compassion over division/hatred and be loud about it - a few bad apples in the world today don’t speak for the whole of humanity and nor should they.

My grandma was known as ‘River Grandma’. She was proud to have always lived near to water.
River Tigris, Euphrates, Lake Tiberias, Nile, and lastly the Thames.
Three generations of my family on the other side lived in the watery other world that is the Fens and looked after horses.
My own upbringing was surrounded by water - Indian Ocean, Atlantic, Blackwater estuary, Regents Canal and now the Channel. I even have a stream in my garden.
I was once told that I’m a child of Poseidon; so it feels totally fitting to have been selected to be part of Sussex contemporary’s open in partnership with Hastings Contemporary - Odyssey, which opens today at the Hastings Contemporary.
Last nights private view was wonderful. Packed out and filled with amazing creative talent. I feel proud to be showing work in my own home town and in such good company.
Do go and see it. It’s on for the next two months.
