The Standard Speeds are the perfect complement to my RED Helium. Unlike many modern lenses, these predecessors to the Arri Ultra Primes have regained popularity in digital cinematography, boasting credits in films like Fargo (Roger Deakins), Monster’s Ball (Roberto Schaefer), and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Nicola Pecorini). They are incredibly compact, lightweight, and exude a timeless blend of vintage and modern aesthetics. These lenses delicately soften digital images without compromising their sharpness or falling into the trap of appearing old-fashioned. Shooting wide open reveals a beautifully expressive bokeh in the peripheral areas. And let’s not forget the iconic T* coating, beloved by many in Zeiss Superspeeds, which lends these lenses the ability to flare quickly and dramatically when backlighting comes into play.
