From the moments of crippling self doubt to figuring it out as I navigate this industry - As a man, father and artist I want to thank my brothers @isaiahmich and @stephan_burchardt for blessing me with your gifts on this journey into the next chapter. @isaiahmich you’ve been established as a writer. Watching you helm this project and making your directorial debut has been a deep joy. You were born to do this. @stephan_burchardt you’ve been a master of your craft for a long time. Without your wealth of experience and guidance this would be impossible. Bringing you together and watching you 2 collaborate is more special and gratifying than I ever could have imagined. I had the tremendous honour of being invited to contribute at a roundtable discussion at the @usbotschaft The topic at hand was our transatlantic relationship and its mutual benefits. Culturally and economically. Something I’m passionate about. Especially in today’s globally divisive climate. I myself am a direct result of that exchange. I spoke about two major incidents in my life that bring me to that conclusion. Growing up I rarely found myself in German media. After high school I was in a slump. Unsure where to go next, I popped in the DVD of TRAINING DAY. @denzelonly & @ethanhawke ‘s intricate dynamic immediately fascinated me. I felt like I was in the car with them. That movie gave me the inspiration to begin the path I’m now still figuring out. I bump my head along the way - but I never let my dream go since. The second important moment was #samasaxon . The show changed my trajectory and lead me to where I am blessed to be today. But making that show was a long process that often seemed impossible. Our creators had the idea for the show and wandered through the German channels for about 20 years: “Great story, great dramatic potential - but a black leading actor in Germany? We can’t see it” Stuck in that loop it was the American @disneyplusde that had to arrive in Germany and make the two decade long dream a reality. Without them I would not have been at that table in the embassy. TV and film are great opportunities to discover hidden realities. Gain perspectives in our at times narrow perceptions of our shared reality. Embrace, embody & celebrate our vibrant societies & humanity in three dimensional stories that move our hearts & minds. As i get to work more internationally these last few years I had to emphasise the importance of Germany not falling behind structurally. Whether in Budapest, Dublin, France or London - everywhere I met great artists that told me about their past experience working in Germany. I hope we can find a solution to facilitate more opportunities returning to our great creatives over here (Slide3) New side quests unlocked. Love, M
